Man Utd will go back in for Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier in January after ‘£18m transfer bid rejected’

MANCHESTER UNITED still want Kieran Trippier and will reportedly make an improved offer in January.

United are believed to have seen an initial £18million bid for the defender rejected by Atletico Madrid this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyes competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claims the Red Devils will go back in for the England right-back when the transfer window reopens.

Atleti will again, however, demand Trippier's release clause of £34m in paid in full.

Diego Simeone's side's refusal to play ball with United over Trippier, 30, played havoc with their summer transfer plans.

United were willing to let Diogo Dalot leave the club to join Borussia Dortmund but pulled the plug on his switch when they knew Trippier would not be joining them.

Solskjaer has already allowed youngster Brandon Williams to join Premier League new boys Norwich on loan to gain top-flight experience.

And Dalot's exit would have left United with only Wan-Bissaka at right back for their title push.

The Bury-born defender has spent two years in the Spanish capital and made 53 league appearances after signing from Spurs for a fee of £20m plus add-ons.

But whether United will be willing to pay over £30m for Trippier after their hefty summer spend remains to be seen.

His England team-mate Jadon Sancho joined for £75 from Dortmund and ex-Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane signed for £42.7m.
