To go back to the SAT analogy days (do they still do these?), Sam Travis : spring training :: Franchy Corder : Triple-A. Cordero has obviously never been able to put it together in his major-league stints, but the dude just rakes at Triple-A. He actually did hit a bit of a cold streak through the middle of August, but he’s back rolling now. This marked his third straight multi-hit games, and he has at least one extra-base hit in each of those games as well. His season-long line at Triple-A is .305/.399/.510, and with him being out of options next year it will be really interesting to see how, if at all, he factors into offseason plans.

This was a great night for the pitching for Portland, though it seems Bello did have to work around some trouble to get through his short outing. Some consistency with efficiency is going to be key for Bello in 2022, but that’s not exactly uncommon for a young pitcher. It’s also very nice to see German in a traditional relief role, which is always where it was mostly clear he’d end up. This was only his second appearance in this role, but he’s got two perfect innings with four of the six batters he’s faced going down with a strikeout. At the plate, Casas has not lived up to expectations with the power, but he’s continuing to show great plate discipline. As a first baseman he still clearly needs that consistent power, but I’d be a lot more worried about him — I’m not really all that worried, for whatever it’s worth — if he wasn’t also consistently getting on base. But he is.

Welcome to High-A, Wu-Yelland. In the 2020 draftees first start at a new level, he led the way in what ended up being a combined no-hitter for the Greenville pitching staff. The southpaw hasn’t been totally consistent this year, and the control concerns coming into the year haven’t been totally alleviated, but it’s clear the stuff has played at the levels at which he’s pitched. I still think the walks push him to the bullpen, but he could be a really interesting player in that role. Speaking of which, Wallace came into the year with big expectations in relief, but struggled most of the year. But going back to July 29, he’s got 24 strikeouts and only five walks over 15 innings of work.

This was a very nice doubleheader for Salem, especially with that game one victory. Drohan was another 2020 draftee just like Wu-Yelland, and while he hasn’t pitched quite as well (despite being more highly-regarded coming into the year) we’ve certainly seen the flashes. But this may have been his best start of the season. He was relatively late to focusing on baseball on its own, so he’s still raw despite being a college draftee, but he’s my early breakout pick for next summer. At the plate, it was a terrific day for Lugo. The shortstop has been perhaps the most disappointing player in the system for me compared to my own preseason expectations, but he has started to turn it on over the last few weeks.

This was a whole lot of offense packed into just five innings, and we obviously have to start with Mayer. Power wasn’t supposed to be nonexistent here, but it also wasn’t supposed to be the focal point of his offensive skillset. And granted, the other stuff has been great as well, but this was already his third career homer. More negatively, this was also his eighth error. Ugueto was the star here, coming just a single short of the cycle. He’s been a monster this year, with a .947 OPS in what is his first season as a pro.
