Coordinator Pete Golding's dad calls Paul Finebaum, questions rooting for Alabama football

Pete Golding has been a member of the Alabama football coaching staff since 2018, and he has been the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator since 2019. 

But on Thursday, Golding's dad admitted to Paul Finebaum that it's hard for him to root for Alabama football. 

Skip Golding called into "The Paul Finebaum Show" on Thursday. Skip started by asking Paul for some advice.

"I'm a born and raised Miami Hurricanes fan," Skip Golding said. "My brothers played there. But my baby boy's the defensive coordinator at Alabama. It's killing me wondering what to pack in my suitcase." 

Finebaum advised Skip Golding: "I think you have to forget your loyalty. I think what your son does matters most because he's got a bright future ahead of him, and if he does well, his future increases and improves by the hour."

Skip Golding responded, "I agree, I agree. I just wanted to call and get your advice. I'm pretty sure I'm going to wear Alabama stuff." 

"I would insist on it," Finebaum said. "Wear Alabama paraphernalia." 

Skip Golding said that his son gives him some nice Alabama gear. 

Finebaum then asked Skip Golding about how his son is handling coaching the Alabama defense with high expectations in 2021. 

"He's pretty level-headed," Skip Golding said. "He's earned it. He's handled it pretty good. ... I'm a high school coach and defensive coordinator in high school in Louisiana for 40 years. I like to think I helped him a little bit."

Finebaum asked Golding about any other coaches in his family. Golding talked about his son Joshua playing college football, but then returned to Pete. 

"I'm really proud of Pete," Skip Golding said. "How can you not be?" 

Skip Golding said that he started coaching football in 1979 after graduating from Delta State University, which is located in Cleveland, Mississippi. He said he's currently coaching at Varnado High School in Angie, Louisiana. 

Golding said that his Varnado team is down from 30 players to 18 this week due to flooding. 

"He's 10 times better than I am," Skip Golding said of Pete being a better coach than him. "I could use him tomorrow night on the sideline."

Pete Golding also attended Delta State and began his coaching career there. Pete Golding lists his hometown as Hammond, Louisiana.
