Nearly 28% Said This Was Their Favorite Cheap Beer To Drink
When you are winding down at home after a long day at work, nothing beats a swig of cold beer to celebrate the end of the day. According to Time, of the more than 60% of American adults who drink alcohol, beer is clearly a fan favorite. With more than 2,800 craft breweries across the country, beer lovers can find almost any flavor known to man, from banana bread beer to Sriracha-flavored brews (via Craft Beer Tour). With less alcohol and sugar content than other liquors, beer can be sipped in moderation, and won't lead to the same headaches and hangovers the next morning (if you're careful). And when it comes to a refreshing drink on a hot summer day, nothing beats an ice-cold brew.
With its gorgeous golden color, whether you are sipping from a solo cup, sharing a pitcher with friends, or drinking from a keg, beer is an incredible beverage in every form. And in certain European countries, like the Czech Republic and Germany, a cheap bear can be less expensive than a bottle of water (via Wall Street Journal). But out of all cheap beers, which brand stands above the rest? To get to the bottom of this mystery, Mashed surveyed 634 individuals across the United States. Between classic brews like Miller, Coors, PBR, Rolling Rock, Budweiser, and Michelob, there was one clear winner.
Budweiser truly is the King of Beers
It turns out, the cheap beer that reigns supreme in consumers' minds is Budweiser, with 28% selecting this American-style lager as their favorite. Seems Bud is living up to its name as the "King of Beers." Budweiser, heralded as a new "light-colored lager," was introduced in 1876 by the St. Louis-based E. Anheuser & Company (via Britannica). The company was renamed the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association in 1879.
The runner-up in the survey was Coors. The "Banquet Beer," which got its nickname from the miners working in the company's home of Golden, Colorado (via Coors), received 23% of the vote. Legend has it that founder Adolph Coors delivered cases of his beer to the miners working in the Rockies, which they would drink during their "banquets" after a long, hard day of work (via The History Bandits).
Michelob and Miller tied for third, with 15% of survey respondents choosing the brews as their favorite cheap beers.
Rolling Rock rolled into fourth with 10% of voters choosing the Extra Pale Lager in the green bottle as their go-to beer. Frat favorite PBR came in fifth with 9% of the vote.
