EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today made a series of late-afternoon moves to their practice squad.

Two veterans released yesterday – linebacker Trent Harris and wide receiver Dante Pettis – were added. Harris is a practice squad exception and Pettis is a practice squad veteran. A team may carry up to six veterans on its practice squad.

Also signed were quarterback Brian Lewerke and running back Dexter Williams.

In corresponding transactions, the Giants terminated the practice squad contracts of tight end Nakia Griffin-Stewart and offensive linemen Jake Burton and Brett Heggie.

The moves leave the Giants with the NFL-maximum 16-man practice squad, plus running back Sandro Plazgummer, who is spending a second season as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program.

Harris was first signed to the Giants' practice squad on Oct. 14, 2020 and to the active roster on Oct. 17, 2020. He played in four games with two starts at linebacker and was credited with five tackles (one solo), a half-sack and one quarterback hit.

Pettis was awarded off waivers to the Giants on Nov. 4, 2020, one day after his release by the 49ers. He played in the season's final two games for the Giants and caught four passes for 76 yards and one touchdown. Pettis had two receptions for 33 yards in his Giants debut at Baltimore on Dec. 27 and two for 43 yards, including his first Giants touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Daniel Jones with 45 seconds remaining in the second quarter, vs. Dallas on Jan. 3.

Lewerke is a first-year quarterback from Michigan State who in 2020 was in the New England Patriots' training camp. He was signed by the Giants on Aug. 16, two days after Clayton Thorson suffered a concussion in the preseason opener vs. the Jets. Six days later, Lewerke was impressive in an extended preseason outing against the Browns in Cleveland, where he completed 11 of 19 passes for 108 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown to David Sills.

Williams, 5-11 and 212 pounds, was released Tuesday by the Green Bay Packers, with whom he spent his first two NFL seasons. A 2019 sixth-round draft choice from Notre Dame, Williams played in seven games and rushed for 10 yards on seven carries. In the just-concluded preseason, he had 17 rushing attempts for 82 yards.

*Wide receiver Alex Bachman was waived with an injury settlement.
