BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University at Buffalo cross country program will open the 2021 season Saturday, Sept. 4 as they will participate at the 53rd Annual Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by the University of Akron. The race will be held at the Silver Creek Metro Park with the men's 4 mile race set to begin at 11:30 a.m. and the women's 5k starting at approximately 12:15 p.m.
A year ago, in a COVID shortened season, the Bulls participated in just two races where the men finished third at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships for the second year in a row. The women's team finished in 12th place.
On Monday afternoon the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I coaches' poll was released and the men's team was selected ninth in the Northeast Region. The Bulls bring back veteran experience with Ryan Buzby, Thomas Flannery, Patrick Hazlitt, Alex Hislop, Scott Loforte, Armani Merlino, Christopher Nowak, Cal Puskar, Nicholas Taboni and Oscar Vazquez.
The women's team has a surplus of underclassmen as there are seven freshmen on the team; Alexandra Cowley, Heidi Eberhardt, Chloe Freeland, Ilsa Kloiber, Allison Newton, Kelly O'Connor, and Anna Recktenwalt. Senior runner Riley Jones will look to lead the charge for the Bulls along with seniors Lily Meek and Samantha Vetter.
