Detroit Red Wings sign forward Carter Rowney to add depth, defensive presence

The Detroit Red Wings announced Thursday they have signed forward Carter Rowney to a one-year deal. 

The team did not disclose financial terms, but multiple outlets report the deal is worth $825,000.

Rowney, 32, is known for his defensive skill and ability on the penalty kill. He has a career plus-minus of minus-8 in 223 career games and just 36 penalty minutes.

Rowney (6 feet 1, 208 pounds) played just 19 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season due to injury, recording six assists. His best offensive season was his first in Anaheim, 2018-19, when he had seven goals and 13 assists in 62 games. He followed that with 19 points (eight goals) in 71 games in 2019-20.

He will likely challenge for a spot among the bottom six forwards, along with players like Givani Smith and Adam Erne. 

It has been a busy offseason for Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, late last month re-signed forward Tyler Bertuzzi for two years and $9.5 million. Yzerman also extended forward Sam Gagner and defenseman Marc Staal, and added forward Pius Suter, defenseman Jordan Oesterle and traded for defenseman Nick Leddy and goalie Alex Nedeljkovic. 

The Wings also reportedly bought out forward Frans Nielsen last month.
