Scott Caan is saying aloha to CBS again: The Hawaii Five-0 veteran is set to star in a new CBS detective drama titled Topangaland, our sister site Deadline reports.
The hour-long drama, currently in development at the Eye network, would star Caan as an ex-cop working for his famous dad’s detective agency and solving cases all around the greater Los Angeles area, “all while navigating a thorny relationship with his dad and the rest of his unconventional family,” per the official synopsis. (Before you ask, Scott’s real-life father James Caan is not expected to play his character’s dad.)
Caan will also co-write Topangaland, along with SEAL Team creator Benjamin Cavell, and will serve as an executive producer as well. Cavell is expected to assume showrunner duties.
Caan starred as police detective Danny Williams alongside Alex O’Loughlin’s Steve McGarrett on the CBS reboot of Hawaii Five-0, which wrapped up a 10-season run last year. The role earned Caan a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor in 2011. He also played talent manager Scott Lavin on the HBO comedy Entourage.
Five-0 fans, will you tune in to see Caan’s CBS return? Drop your thoughts on the news — and the show’s premise — in a comment below.
Seems like a missed opportunity to have James in it. Unless the father will have a regular role and that’s not something James wants.
My thoughts exactly.
Missed opportunity? I guess if you want to go for a cliche casting, instead of finding one who could fit the character.
They need an actor to play the father of S. Caan`s character, not someone to play S. Caan`s father. That is something completely different.
Actually my first question was is Danielle Fishel going to be in it.
My first thought was that Topanga too cause it’s such a unique name….than with the bit about the “unconventional family” it just put a smile on my face thinking about a Topanga-esque character being part of a series like this, especially if the writers are big “Boy Meets World” fans.
I was just coming here to type that!
I know it’s the name of a real place, but BMW pretty much trademarked it. It feels weird seeing it used anywhere else.
Lol
So is this an American remake of Republic of Doyle?
Other than the famous dad part and big town LA vs St Johns, sounds like it.
awww James Caan would have been great. I’d love to see him on the small screen again.
I didn’t know he was a writer? Does he have any previous writing credits?
Not intended as a reply. I must have accidentally touch reply trying to find and turn off that annoying Pluto ad.
Most assuredly! I love 5-0 and Scott was such a huge part of what made it awesome! I also love all the characters and the story plots, not to mention the location scenes. Cant wait to hear more about this show!
I immediately thought to joke is this a Boy Meets World Spin Off.
Topanga is a city in Los Angeles county, I’m thinking that is where the name comes from. I also could be totally wrong.
Considering the logline states “solving cases all around the greater Los Angeles area”, I would estimate the chances of you being correct at 99.999%. Though technically according to wiki, Topanga is a “census designated place” and not a city.
Topanga Canyon is in the Santa Monica mountains, I think.
I’m not a Boy Meets World fan, but I also think of that character.
Hell yeah. Book’em Danno is still my favorite line although not sure it was yours. Lol 😆. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Congratulations Scott Caan!! Can’t wait to watch it as I really miss all the Hawaii Five-0 team of actors. These all women detectives shows are not worth watching and I have no interest in watching the one featuring women in Hawaii.
Awesome! Congratulations Scott. One of my favorite actors. Miss you Alex & team on Hawaii five-o. Can’t wait to see you in action again
I loved scott caan in hawaii 5 0, so I will definitely watch him in this new show. But please give him the same haircut style as in the early years of Hawaii 5 0, very attractive.
I swore off CBS because of how they did Hawaii Five-0 at the end, but for Scott, I might brave the network again.
Me too! I lot of H50 fans felt that way, but I will watch this for sure
I’m probably alone in thinking this, but did anyone notice how many shows Scott missed on H5O in the latter seasons? What show-runner/network in their right mind would make him the central character? IMDB says he was credited with being there for 240 eps, the entire series, but thats gotta be out by at least 20 or 30 shows. I get that he has a lot of followers, but geeze, it seemed likely that he wasn’t that engaged when he was on a wildly successful show…
It was my understanding that Scott did not relocate to the islands like much of the other cast, and as such grew tired of commuting during the series’ later years, particularly after he got married and had a child (I think). I believe he negotiated fewer episodes into his contract so he would not have to commute as much. Since this show is LA based they probably figured it would not be a problem.
Sorry PugMama, we basically said the same thing. You just beat me to it. I just take too long, always trying to make sure what I’m attempting to say makes sense.
You’re not wrong with noticing how many episodes towards the end he was missing. That being said, I know part of the reason was he had a girlfriend in Los Angeles—I don’t know their status now—that got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. And with him wanting to be around more, that resulted in him flying back and forth to Hawaii less. From my understanding, he’d fly to Hawaii for roughly a week or two and then take the rest of the month off.
I don’t know if there was any other reason. You never know if people have their own production company’s and get busy with them.
So… If M had a small child he would merrily abandon the kid and run off to the other end of the country? Good to know.
Me gusto mucho Hawaii 50 , el final medio cruel para Dano .( no me gusto ).
Espero verlo en esta nueva serie …..Si la dan en Argentina
The reason for Scott missing so many HF-O episodes was because he wanted to be with his daughter in LA. Since his new show will be filmed there, there’s no reason for him not to be there.
I’m surprised he’s even doing this show. I got the impression he didn’t like doing television.
Scott is not strong enough to carry a show. There’s a reason for Alex’s Steve McGarrett character in HF-O becoming the dominant of the two.
Never was a fan of Scott Caan. Always felt he played it too “Brooklyn-like” in mannerism, speech, the way he walked, etc. Agree he is not strong enough to carry a show alone. But best of luck to him.
Thank you. Glad I’m not the only one thinking this. How long before he decides this one has too much action for him, or he doesn’t want to be there any more. I grew tired of him and the hand waving as he sat or simple stood in place during scenes in 5-0. He seemed to be merely comic relief at the end and the lead was worn out trying to carry it himself. I’d never have him leading a show.
Hope he is not by himself not strong enough
Yes I’ll watch I miss him in Hawaii Five o and I’m so happy to find out he’s in another show. I can’t wait to see it.
Congratulations to Scott! This is fantastic news. Will definitely not miss this drama with Scott Caan. He’s my favorite actor and he’s a fantastic writer so this will be awesome. He was fantastic as Danno in Hawai Five . I’ve missed him on the screen. Can’t wait!
What’s he going to do wave his hands and yell at his father for driving his car in LA???
Absolutely!! Hawaii 5-0 was the best show! Can’t believe its canceled. What a waste
I will definitely check this out. I really like Seal Team, so having someone from that show working on this, makes me excited.
Love Scott Caan. He is an excellent actor both dramatic and funny.
My favorite side of Scott is when he forgets the camera is there and is so flipping brilliant.
I look forward to watching Topangaland! No co-lead, you are the star!👏👏 Knock one outta the park Scott. I am a fan!
Happy to hear that…Love him, will definitely watch!!
Will I watch? Hmm… will Scott actually show up on screen? He was a co-star on Hawaii Five-O and was barely in the last couple seasons. It was so annoying.
So, no, I doubt I’ll watch. Now, if his real life dad was going to play his on screen dad, I’d definitely watch! I like his dad way better than him!
Sorry you were annoyed, but he renegotiated contract after his daughter was born and I won’t give him grief for putting family first.
Yes I will absolutely give Scott Caan’s new crime drama a look see. Although so many spin offer’s don’t do so well. And yes I know it’s not a spin off. But Mr Caan is a spin off of Hawaii 5/0. He should have tried out for the new CSI MIAMI.
Qué alegría volver a ver al querido Scott Caan en la pantalla!!Que sigan los éxitos inolvidable Danno!!
We fans love Scott Cann and Alex O’loughlin
They are amazing, we would like to see Scott um another show.
We would like to see AlexO’loughlin too
