The NFL season opener between the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins is set to do something that a pair of Alabama quarterbacks haven’t done since 1983.

Mac Jones, who was named the starter for the Patriots on Tuesday, will square off against Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins in New England on Sept. 12.

Jones and Tagovailoa were teammates at Alabama for 3 seasons before Tagovailoa joined Miami as the fifth player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft. Jones was then taken No. 15 overall by the Patriots this past spring.

Nov. 21, 1983 is the date of the most recent game in which 2 Alabama alumni squared off as the opposing starting quarterbacks, according to AL.com.

It will become the first game with opposing Alabama QBs since Richard Todd rallied the New York Jets to a 31-28 victory over Ken Stabler and the New Orleans Saints on ABC’s “Monday Night Football” on Nov. 21, 1983, at the Louisiana Superdome.

Stabler completed 12-of-19 passes for 190 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Saints. Todd completed 20-of-30 passes for 230 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Jets.

Barring injury, or a major trade, such as Deshaun Watson being traded to the Dolphins, it appears that this matchup is on tap for Week 1.
