CONFIRMED: Salomon Rondon signs for Everton

As Everton fans wring their hands at the prospect of having no established cover at the outside back positions, the Blues went out and gave Rafa Benitez another attacking option.

Salomon Rondon, who formerly played for Rafa at Newcastle, has signed from Chinese Super League side Dalian Professional on a two-year contract with an option for a third year. The Blues waited up right until 11pm when the transfer window to announce this one even though most media sources had reported it done hours before.

The Venezuelan striker is the perfect backup for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is currently missing England’s World Cup Qualifiers due to a muscle strain. Should (when) Rondon is called upon to play in play of DCL, Everton won’t have to adjust much at all as the 31-year-old’s physical and aerial presence is very similar to that of the young English striker.

While certainly not a signing for the future, Rondon brings both Premier League experience and the trust of his manager. And despite the perceived lack of excitement around the acquisition of the former Newcastle man, it must be said that he was extremely productive for the Magpies during his time there.

In the 2018-2019 season Rondon played 2600 minutes and contributed 11 goals and 7 assists. This is more total goals/assists a player has had for Everton than BEFORE THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. Rondon is quicker than expected and should be excited to be playing again in the Premier League after his excursion to China.

Rondon was unfortunately involved in an accidental collision with James McCarthy a few years ago that ended up with the midfielder suffering a horrific leg-break. The striker’s genuine remorse at the time of the incident was applauded by an otherwise stunned Goodison Park and the Blues fanbase have retained a soft spot for the player since then.

Will he be the answer when the Toffees need someone to step in for DCL or when they need a late goal? We will have to find out!
