The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly removing quarterback Shane Buechele from their roster as they get set for the season.

As NFL teams across the league are forced to figure out their official 53-man roster, every team is faced with interesting (and potentially difficult) choices. The Kansas City Chiefs, like every other team, are working to get their roster trimmed down. And one of the players who is reportedly being waived is quarterback Shane Buechele.

According to a tweet, a source informed Adam Caplan of the Chiefs’ plans to waive the undrafted free agent quarterback.

Now, this isn’t incredibly shocking news. There was no way that Buechele was ever going to beat out Patrick Mahomes for the starting job, but Buechele looked solid at times during the preseason and he definitely showed flashes of potential.

In Kansas City’s preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings, Buechele completed 20 of 33 pass attempts for 231 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.

Though there is that interception and his stats aren’t the best ever, Buechele appeared solid, which is all you can realistically ask of a young quarterback who signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. All things considered, that’s a nice performance. Plus, he was consistent and solid throughout the preseason.

That’s not shocking given his stats from his college days.

Buechele played at Texas before eventually losing his starting job and then making his way to SMU, where he thrived in Sonny Dykes’ Air Raid offense (a similar offense to what prepared Mahomes for the NFL). During his two seasons at SMU, Buechele threw for 7,024 yards and 57 touchdowns against just 16 picks.

And so, while the decision to waive Buechele may seem like an interesting one, it makes sense given the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs seem content to have two quarterbacks on their roster.

It’ll be intriguing to see where Buechele goes from here. There are some teams out there who are still trying to figure out what they want to do at quarterback. Will we see Buechele end up on Kansas City’s practice squad or will he get a shot at making a team somewhere else?
