Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Does Series Finale Title Hint at Jake’s [Spoiler]?

With just two episodes left before its hour-long swan song, NBC has released a title (and an extremely vague description) for Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Sept. 16 series finale. The episode is titled “The Last Day,” and the synopsis simply reads… “The series finale.”
The title could refer to Jake’s last day on the force. Nine-Nine‘s farewell season has seen Amy’s husband grapple with his role as a detective, which has led some viewers to believe that he will resign from the NYPD before season’s end. That hunch was first fed by the Season 8 premiere, in which Peralta expressed mixed emotions about what it means to be a cop in 2021. He spent much of the episode projecting his insecurities onto Rosa, who had previously resigned in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. At the time, Jake said that he’d like to believe he could still do good work as a member of the NYPD, but had now seen first-hand — via his former captain, who destroyed body-cam footage of two uniformed officers assaulting an innocent Black woman — that the system was broken (read recap).
Episode 4, meanwhile, saw Jake do something he’d never done in the past: Sit out a high-profile arrest in order to take care of his infant son Mac, as Amy presented a new NYPD pilot program to higher-ups.
Then in Episode 5, Jake wrestled with the possibility of losing his job if Doug Judy — aka the Pontiac Bandit — managed to outsmart him and evade a five-year prison sentence. Judy suggested that Jake losing his job would perhaps “be for the best,” before pitching the detective an alternative career as a real estate agent to the stars (or, more precisely, as the go-to real estate agent for Zayn Malik and fellow former members of One Direction). But all joking aside, Judy told Jake that “you are more than just your job.” And following that discussion, Jake provided the car thief with the instrument he needed to “Mindfreak” himself out of his handcuffs… and out of prison.
That brings us to Episode 6, which saw Jake accept responsibility for making a wrongful arrest without sufficient evidence, then harassing the man he arrested based solely on a hunch. In turn, Captain Holt was forced to place Jake on a five-month suspension — with just three episodes remaining in Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s run.
Ahead of its finale, B99 has one more double header airing this Thursday, Sept. 2, consisting of “Game of Boyles” (in which Jake, Terry and Charles visit the Boyle Family Farm) and “Renewal” (wherein the squad comes together to work on an important high-stakes case). Could the latter’s title be referring to a vow renewal for Holt and Kevin? (Sunday Night Football‘s season kickoff occupies NBC’s Thursday slate on Sept. 9.)

I do think Jake is going to leave. I think Amy will be continuing her pilot program while Jake stays home to take care of Mac.
My guess is that the show goes through with “defunding the police”, and the 99 is closed down or assimilated into other precints, and the team is disbanded. Either that, or Captain Holt retires.
…That’s not what “defunding the police” means. It’s about redistributing resources to shift towards prioritising rehabilitation instead of punitive punishments.
Basically, its about fixing the disease instead of the symptoms.
…And in doing so, you move money from the police to other organizations and resources, like social workers and mental health caseworkers, which could result in downsizing of officers and closing station houses.
Yes, as John Jones said, it’s quite literally relocating funds elsewhere. Which might result in certain precints closing down or merging. I didn’t say the whole New York police force is going to shut down, only the 99.
Defunding the police is over. How do I know? Just turn to the media. How much have you heard it in the news (real news, not FN or Newsmax) lately? Passing fad that wasn’t serious in the first place. Just hyped by the fake media (FN and Newsmax).
Cool but the show was shot months ago, when it was still very much an everyday topic.
Jake is definitely leaving at the end. I also think Captain Holt is gonna go too. This season is going by quick!😣😩

what’s the point of him resigning when his wife is going to be a captain in the nypd?
It goes against the message they’ve spent all season dealing with: improving the police force. Jake just quitting rather than staying to improve things is the wrong message.
I think they’ve been building to this all season. He’s been conflicted and has now gone so far as to help a felon escape as well as making a wrongful arrest. There’s also been several episodes where he and Amy have struggled to balance work with parenting. Him quitting to be a stay at home dad while Amy uses her higher position to try and affect change from within resolves all of those things.
I don’t see Jake leaving the force, unless it was to join the FBI. I could get behind that.
Plot twist: We learn the whole show was an extended prequel to “The Last Man on Earth.”
I think Jake’s last day may be the last day he is with B99 and the day before he joins the Internal Affairs / Professional Standards Branch of the NYPD. Jake will put his investigative talents and passion into investigating and holding corrupt police officers accountable. And he will clean up the NYPD from within and help restore public trust and confidence in the dedicated honest members of the force.
The series finale should be recreating Dear Sister skit from SNL
He’ll come back after his five-month suspension and just not feel it anymore. He’ll have had time to reflect and he’ll decide to hang it up.
I don’t want to engage about any of the social issues, but I want to say, that not once…..NOT ONCE, did I watch this show to think about social issues. I watched it to get a reprieve from everything going on, and society forced them into delving into these things. I won’t watch the last season.
In my mind, this show simply made me laugh. We need that. We need that if we are to be able to make it through the woes of the world. Please, for the love of all things, let us have some humor. Let us have sports, without activism.
It’s not about agreeing or disagreeing with entertainers or athletes. I won’t reveal my stance on anything here.
My only stance is that if we take all of the joy out of everything, I wonder what we are even fighting for.
Just let things like this be light and funny. Let them be. Let comedians be comedians. Let football teams score touchdowns, and let black and white men high five each other and give hugs, buy each other beers, and even experience the agony of watching your team fall, together.

So you want a comedic COP show with a diverse cast that has been talking about social issues during its entire run… to not talk about social issues they deal with on a daily basis? Cool. Strong opinion.
The show has been such a disorganized mess in recent years with half-seasons, no season, oddly scheduled seasons, different networks; who gives a rip? The only constant has been Melissa Fumero ‘s undeniable sensuousness, even when hiding behind furniture and pillows to hide pregnancy. Fumero is en Fuego!
