Sports for August 30th

Rowdy Tellez hit a three-run home run, Aaron Ashby recorded his first major league win, and the Brewers muscled their way out of a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.  Luis Urías also homered and Kolten Wong hit a two-run double for the Brewers, whose first seven hits went for extra bases to keep the many Milwaukee fans among the crowd of 26,186 cheering consistently. Christian Yelich, who went 2 for 4 with a walk, had Milwaukee’s first single in the seventh inning.

The Brewers raised their major league-best road record to 43-23 while ending their only losing streak longer than two games since the All-Star break. The NL Central leaders, who stretched their advantage over second-place Cincinnati to 8 1/2 games, have had only two losing streaks longer than three games all season. They’re in control of the No. 2 seed, 5 1/2 games behind the league-leading Giants.

The Brewers, who are in the middle of the pack at best in the majors in most hitting categories, scored five runs during their three-game losing streak. They were more than ready for Twins rookie Griffin Jax (3-3), who gave up six hits and all six runs over five innings. Tellez went deep with two outs in the third, his first homer in 13 games after entering in a 6-for-37 slump.

Ashby (1-0) allowed three hits in five innings, including a two-run homer by Miguel Sanó. The nephew of former major league pitcher Andy Ashby had his sinker in sharp form in the longest appearance of his brief career. Ashby gave up seven runs in the first inning of his debut on June 30.

All-Star RHP Corbin Burnes (8-4, 2.30 ERA) starts on Monday night as the Brewers visit San Francisco. RHP Johnny Cueto (7-6, 3.73) takes the mound for the Giants. First pitch is at 8:45 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Pirates edged the Cardinals 4-3, the Marlins slipped past the Reds 2-1 and the White Sox pounded the Cubs 13-1. The Brewers lead the Reds by 8 ½ games.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game at Quad Cities was cancelled because of rain.

Josh Allen completed his first nine attempts and finished 20 of 26 for 194 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Buffalo Bills to a 19-0 win over the Green Bay Packers in both teams’ preseason finales.

Allen capped Buffalo’s opening drive with a perfect throw in hitting Gabriel Davis in stride — a step ahead of cornerback Isaac Yiadom — on a post route for a 31-yard touchdown on third-and-20. Allen then squeezed a tight 3-yard pass over the middle to Zack Moss to put the Bills up 13-0 on his third and final possession. The fourth-year starter showed off his familiar dual-threat ability by making his best throw three plays before Moss’ touchdown. Scrambling to his left, Allen threw a pass across his body to a wide-open Cole Beasley for a 21-yard gain.

Buffalo finished 3-0, extending its preseason winning streak to eight games, going back to a 26-13 loss to Cincinnati on Aug. 26, 2018. The Packers finished 0-3, closing a preseason in which a majority of their starters didn’t play. Aaron Rodgers, the NFL’s reigning MVP, sat out the entire preseason and was one of 31 players the Packers rested against Buffalo.

Jordan Love, Rodgers’ heir apparent, played into the third quarter and finished 12 of 18 for 149 yards and an interception that was thrown wildy into the end zone and picked off by former Packer Micah Hyde.. He was returning after missing last weekend with an injury to his throwing shoulder. A myriad of mistakes led to the Packers coming up empty, with their first three possessions stalling inside the Buffalo 21. Wide receiver Malik Taylo caught 5 passes for 69 yards and Reggie Begelton 4 for 51. Amari Rodgers had 6 catches for 41 yards. Kylin Hill led Green Bay’s rushing attack with 37 yards on 7 carries while Dexter Williams gained 28 yards on 5 carries.

Final cuts to get the roster down to 53 players must be made by Tuesday afternoon. Green Bay opens the season at New Orleans on September 12th with the kickoff at 3:25.

In other team news, the Packers released QB Jake Dolegala and signed CB Rojesterman Farris, and also released WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) off injured reserve after coming to an injury settlement. The release of Dolegala leaves the Packers with three quarterbacks — Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love and Kurt Benkert. With Rodgers not playing in the preseason, the release of Dolegala likely means Love will play Saturday’s preseason finale at Buffalo after missing last week with a shoulder injury. Benkert would serve as the backup. Meanwhile, Farris is a first-year player out of the University of Hawaii, who spent time with the Bears and Broncos last season.

It was a duel between Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau but Cantlay won in a six-hole playoff to win the BMW Championship.  Cantlay has now won five times on the PGA Tour. It was  his third FedEx Cup win but his third win via a playoff.  Cantlay and DeChambeau both finished 27 under par at 261.
