LINCOLN COUNTY – Lincoln County Sheriff Ken Schneider on Friday, Aug. 27 announced that patrol deputies will carry automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in their patrol units.
AEDs are used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. They can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm, according to www.RedCross.org.
“The AEDs were purchased using funding from federal drug seizures based on local investigations and money issued locally from the federal CARES Act,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release. “During training conducted (last week), all deputies were recertified in CPR along with instructions on how to use their AEDs.”
According to the American Heart Association, the early use of an AED can achieve a survival rate of nearly 40% during sudden cardiac incidents, the Sheriff’s Office noted.
