CASCO (WGME) -- Deputies arrested a man on Sunday who allegedly committed a series of burglaries in the Casco area.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office charged 23-year-old Austin Swanson-Monge with six counts of burglary, four counts of theft, and violating conditions of release.
On Sunday around 4:45 a.m., deputies responded to the Casco-Naples Bulky Waste Facility and Transfer Station for a report of an alarm.
Deputies say they interrupted a man who was trying to open a safe inside the office. The suspect then ran away.
Deputies searched the area for the suspect and found a vehicle with Swanson-Monge’s wallet and a cellphone inside.
While deputies continued to search for the suspect, another burglary was reported on Parker Pond Pines Rd. in Casco.
While investigating this burglary, deputies located another seasonal home that had been broken into.
Eventually, a deputy found Swanson-Monge sleeping inside an unoccupied camp, and he was in possession of several stolen items from the camp burglaries.
During one of the burglaries, deputies say he stole a kayak and fled across Parker Pond. The kayak was later recovered and returned to its owner.
According to deputies, Swanson-Monge later confessed to two unsolved burglaries at Casco Variety and Pears Ice Cream in Casco Village.
Swanson-Monge is being held at the Cumberland County jail.
