The Mets will be without one of their longtime staples for the remainder of the 2021 season.
Radio broadcaster Howie Rose announced on Monday he would be stepping away from Mets games for the remainder of the season to address a medical issue. He will call games on Tuesday and Wednesday before departing.
“Some of you may know that I’ve been dealing with a personal medical issue this season,” Rose tweeted. “In light of this I will require surgery later this week, so following Wednesday’s game I will have to put this season in the books. Looking forward to starting a new chapter next spring.”
Rose was absent from Mets broadcasts for one week in April while dealing with a medical issue, but he quickly returned to the booth for his usual work before Monday’s announcement.
Rose’s departure following Wednesday’s game means he will miss the final 29 games of the 2021 season, with the plan of returning to the booth at the start of the 2022 season.
Rose has been a part of Mets radio and television broadcasts since 1995, and he took over as the full-time voice of the radio broadcast in 2003.
The veteran broadcaster emceed the jersey retirement ceremony of Jerry Koosman on Saturday, running the ceremony on the field while introducing Koosman and other Mets legends while the pitcher’s No. 36 was unveiled in the Citi Field rafters.
