Well, this certainly bodes well for “Sharpwin” fans. When New Amsterdam returns for Season 4, the NBC drama’s theme will be: “Love heals,” states TVLine’s exclusive key art for the upcoming run.
Considering those words are plastered over Max’s face, we have to believe the widower’s heart is on the mend and that he’s moving on after recently taking a big romantic leap. We doubt we have to remind you that the doc finally removed his wedding ring and then kissed Helen in the Season 3 finale, acting on long-simmering feelings for his friend/colleague.
After a difficult year that found the hospital staff dealing with COVID and its emotional toll, “I think that what we’ll see in Season 4 is, hopefully, what we’re all feeling right now in this hopeful moment of a new beginning — that the worst is behind us, and the best is in front of us,” showrunner David Schulner told TVLine during a post mortem Q&A. “I think a lot of us have thought about how we want to live our lives differently, how we can be better, how we can love the people close to us more fully. So hopefully Max is where all of us are or will be soon, embracing the future.”
As TVLine exclusively reported, Season 4 will welcome several new doctors: The Killing and True Blood vet Michelle Forbes will recur as Dr. Veronica Fuentes, a calm, poised and fearless fixer who is brought in to “reconstruct” the failing hospital. Additionally, Sandra Mae Frank (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) will appear in multiple episodes as a deaf surgeon, while Chloe Freeman (The Blacklist) will play a new resident in Dr. Bloom’s Emergency Department.
New Amsterdam Season 4 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c. Until then, check out the poster below, then hit the comments with your thoughts!
I am so excited waiting to watch it! You are great guys 🤩
Any idea when the promo comes out? Speculation and past history says maybe tomorrow, but can anyone confirm?
You know that this show is based on the book of a real medical director of Bellevue Hospital in New York City? So yes the main lead is a straight white male.
I love this show, if it were any more liberal I couldn’t take it. It’s a nice blend of people and diverse enough that it can still appeal to most audiences. Not everyone is off the charts, it feels what I’d expect from a hospital with a broad audience. I love the show!
This actually isn’t completely true. One of the main recurring nurses identifies as trans and non binary. They also did an entire SL about a trans kid who was looking to get top surgery. So no, there are no headlined trans characters if that is what you are looking for, but that doesn’t mean the show isn’t progressive in plenty of other ways.
And yes, they cast a straight white male as the lead. But they also added 5 other leads, 4 of whom come from varied and diverse backgrounds. If that doesn’t work for you, no need to watch, but it seems you might be dismissing it prematurely. The show isn’t perfect and they make missteps all the time, but as shows go, it is fairly progressive.
unless there are two “rainstar” here, this person makes the same “complaint” on like every story. not sure if person is sincere or mocking actual advocacy. (seems like latter.)
This was actually a plotline in the show. He realized this and tried to fire himself for being too white, straight, male.
I think on the whole it does okay inclusivity-wise, but you have a point about Trans inclusion.
Funny, I was just thinking about how for years people have rightly complained that Black women characters were so rarely considered for romantic interests for leading male characters (unless they themselves were Black) and here’s a show that’s going forward with the romantic chemistry between its leads…
I don’t think any show can “do it all” when it comes to progress, it’s silly and unfair to expect them to, and I think that while yes esp network dramas do far too often star the straight white male (and to the person pointing out that it’s based on a true story–the choices of whose story to tell is part of the issue) that doesn’t mean the people making them can’t try to have some kind of diversity and progress.
Trans rep and inclusion is important but visibility done poorly is worse than no inclusion at all, remember. And just saying that a show can’t claim to be progressive w/o trans characters diminishes trans stories into being a box to be ticked and invites perfunctory representation.
But of course, if you only watch shows with trans characters this one apparently isn’t for you. But why be mad about it?
Excited
Whatever!!!! Cant wait to see my very favorite show!!!
First of all the show’s superb and inclusive and they’ve also got the co-worker chemistry and finally got the romance chemistry as well. #Sharpwin
Love them together, they have such sexy chemistry!
Ryan looks beautiful there, and I’m very excited for the new season–I love New Amsterdam!
I may be one of a very few, who hoped the season finale had NOT ended the way that it did! So many of my favorite shows begin seeming more like soap operas, than the dramas I tune in to see! I love actors, just not the directors’ and producers’ points of view…
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I absolutely loved the way it ended, beautiful romantic storyline along with good drama.
I love this show.it has a beautiful romantic storyline.it also has alot of diversity in it.i can’t wait for the season premiere.
I am so so so excited to see the next season
Really handsome straight white man!! How lucky are we?
Oh my gosh! He’s gorgeous!
I hope that Max & Helen
do have a relationship.
Where is Max daughter Luna ? Is she still with the grandparents ?
Certainly hoping this season is better than last. I know Max cares, but he can’t solve the world’s problems by himself. Ease up on the social issues. Be more real life..
I love the series. Waiting on Season 3 on Netflix in South Africa.
When on UK TV screens?
Marie
Why can’t we just discuss a show on TV?? Although, yes it based on the real hospital in NY. But EVERYTHING else is FICTION. Idk about anyone else, but for me, I watch TV and some shows to escape and laugh and cry..
Not worrying or judging it’s diversity and genders. It’s a TV show for heavens sake. Take all that other BS and do something, not just whine about TV!! Its ALL way out of hand anymore.
I will be watching with excitement for Sharpwin to go forward!
Can’t wait for season 4,just love this series
I absolutely love this show and I love that Max is finally going to find love again after the death of his wife. Can’t wait til it starts!!
Two of the four leads on the show are either gay or bisexual. Another is African-American. One is a Brit/Black woman. And you say that the show is not progressive???
I would venture to say that a large majority of Americans do not even personally know one single Trans person. That being said, it certainly is not imperative to have a Trans lead. I’m sure it will come at some point, though. Just be patient.
I agree!
Can’t wait for Season 4 of New Amsterdam! Great show and wonderful acting!
So beautiful this show
Yes, Love does heal…let us all heal with love toward each other.
