Some parents want Waukesha schools to reconsider a decision to turn down federal funding for free school lunches.
Dozens of people protested Friday outside the school district's headquarters.
They are upset Waukesha's school board opted out of a federal program offering free lunches for all despite family income.
The program is available because of COVID-19's impact on family finances.
Waukesha was the only school district in the state to opt out.
"By opting out of this free federal meal program, they have taken away meals from families that are in the in-between. They might not qualify for free and reduced lunches but could still use a helping hand, and we want to help families in the school district, and we feel our presence here will help do that," rally organizer David Dringenburg said.
The school district's decision to turn down the free lunch program has received national attention.
The district released a statement earlier this week outlining the reasons for its decision, including an increase in wasted food at the high school level.
