The Baltimore Ravens have an impressive history in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.
They got Matt Judon in the fifth, and Jermaine Lewis and Jeff Mitchell.
Two current starters, Pernell McPhee and Nick Boyle? You guessed it. Round five.
In this year's draft, they took cornerback Shaun Wade of Ohio State in the fifth round.
In 2019, Wade would have been a first round pick, but he opted to return to Columbus to chase a national title in 2020.
It was a mistake. Wade battled injuries and played poorly last year, and it cost him millions. The Ravens watched him fall down the draft board and took a chance, getting a potentially first round talent in the fifth.
It didn't work out. At all. Wade was underwhelming in training camp workouts and was badly outplayed by Chris Westry. With tight roster battles going on all over camp, there were those who thought the Ravens might have to cut him, and they hate to cut draft choices. Especially rookies.
Wade helped them out. He played fairly well in the Ravens' two pre-season games, even getting the game clinching interception against New Orleans . That got the attention of the cornerback-starved New England Patriots.
Thursday, the Ravens traded Wade to New England in exchange for a pair of draft picks, a 7th rounder in 2022 and a 5th round pick in 2023, so instead off cutting a guy, they turned him into two draft picks.
One other thing: If you noticed, one of them is a fifth rounder.
Stay tuned.
