Listen to Episode 81 of ‘Amazin’ But True’: Luis Rojas’ Mets Days are Running Out feat. Ty Burrell

Luis Rojas’ days managing the Mets seem to be running out. The Mets’ August to forget is almost over, but not without another gut-wrenching loss Wednesday in Queens. The lineup failed, the defense failed and Rojas failed. The Giants gave the Mets endless chances and the Mets would not take any of them. The season is slipping away from them, but hey the 1973 Mets once pulled a rabbit out of their hat, turning a 58-70 record into a trip to the World Series. Could the 2021 Mets, who are 61-65, do anything similar?

To answer that question and get into everything in Mets land, we bring you a new edition of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with me and former Met Nelson Figueroa, featuring a great interview with a big Mets fan and Emmy-Award winning actor, Ty Burrell.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:

  • WEDNESDAY’S DEBACLE: Five double plays, brutal baserunning and bad defense. The Mets did everything wrong they could. Rojas stunk up the stadium by pulling Taijuan Walker with 74 pitches in the seventh inning. Jeff McNeil made a terrible attempt at a catch on the ball that dropped in the outfield. The Giants handed the Mets chances and they could not take advantage. Is there any way the Mets could get out of this and go on a run?
  • MEETING JOHNNY CUETO: Me and Figgie met Cueto after the game outside Citi Field. Figgie pitched with him in winter ball in the Dominican Republic. We break down the “drip” that Cueto had on, matched up against my low-budget “drip” in a hilarious photo.

Nelson Figueroa Spanish Academy: The Cueto meeting leads to the Spanish Academy and me trying to say the name of two teams in the Dominican Republic.

Ty Burrell Interview:
Emmy-Award winning actor, comedian, producer, Mets fan

  • METS FAN: Lived in Astoria and became a Mets fan in 2003 when David Wright and Jose Reyes came up. Favorite moment was the Endy Chavez catch in Game 7 in 2006 and least favorite was the Carlos Beltran strikeout from the same game.
  • ACTING: First credit was “Law & Order.” Did not start acting really until 20s/early 30s. Wasn’t until he was 42 until he got on Modern Family.
  • FIRST PITCH: Explaining what happened on his first pitch gone wrong in 2018 at Citi Field. Figgie talks about his only time throwing a first pitch out.
  • MODERN FAMILY: Misses his friends from the show, but it was the right time and they all agreed it was for the show to come to end in 2020. Has thought about retiring, but has a show in development and doing some producing.
