The Saints lost the services of one young defensive back, but they saw the return of another as they got back to practice Thursday morning.

Coach Sean Payton announced that rookie Bryce Thompson had been waived with an injury designation. The former Tennessee Volunteer had impressed after signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent. He logged four tackles, an interception and a pass defensed in two preseason games, but was hurt during the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday.

Thompson's departure came on the same day as cornerback KeiVarae Russell's return from the COVID list, which would've necessitated a corresponding move to keep the roster at 80 players.

Payton said the team is "constantly" looking at the position and they'll continue to add depth where they can, particularly after the cutdown to 53 players next week around the league.

"It's hard to do the math always if you're just looking internally," Payton said. "So I think having a good handle on the other teams and what might become available, I think that will be important."

The team is expected to be without Ken Crawley for multiple weeks after he also suffered an injury against the Jaguars. They close out their preseason slate on Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals.
