Ronaldo to Manchester United: Live transfer updates as Juventus star OKs contract proposal for Man Utd reunion

Cristiano Ronaldo, one of soccer's biggest superstars, is going back to one of his old haunts at Old Trafford. The club confirmed on Friday that the 36-year-old Portugal international will join the club after a rocky breakup with Italian side Juventus ahead of Tuesday's summer transfer window deadline.

Ronaldo is joining Man United from Juve in a transfer deal for €25 million ($29.48 million) -- according to CBS Sports insider Fabrizio Romano -- to head back to the place where he called home from 2003-2009 and won nine trophies, including three Premier League titles (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) and the Champions League crown (2007-08).

From Manchester United:

Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical.

Cristiano, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, has so far won over 30 major trophies during his career, including five UEFA Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, seven league titles in England, Spain and Italy, and the European Championship for his native Portugal.

In his first spell for Manchester United, he scored 118 goals in 292 games.

Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.

Ronaldo first arrived on the red side of Manchester ahead of the 2003-04 season at the age of 19 as United's first ever Portuguese player and played there for six seasons before being sold to Real Madrid. He was one of United's biggest stars, and remains the only player in the Premier League era to break 30 goals for the club.

The transfer marks the end of a whirlwind week which started with Ronaldo coming off the bench in Juventus' season opener against Udinese to start his 20th season as a professional when he had a late winner in that match disallowed by VAR. Ronaldo didn't start the match because he wanted to seek other options, Fabrizio Romano reported. Over the course of the week, Ronaldo and agent Jorge Mendes increased their pressure on Juventus, and he was planning to sit out the team's second match as he tried to find a new club.

Originally it seemed Manchester City, would be that destination with rumors circulating both of Ronaldo's desire to play for the rivals of his former club, as well as City's interest. However, no formal offer was ever made and on Friday they officially decided against signing Ronaldo just as United stepped in and agreed to make a deal happen.

Ronaldo's move is the latest domino to fall in an absolutely epic transfer window with the biggest stars in the world either moving or trying to move. Ronaldo joins Lionel Messi who left Barcelona for PSG after the Catalan club was unable to financially clear enough salary to re-sign him, as absolutely megawatt stars changing teams. But the summer has also seen Romelu Lukaku move from Inter Milan to Chelsea, Harry Kane fail to force a move from Tottenham to Manchester City, and the action isn't over yet. Kylian Mbappe remains in the middle of a tug of war between his current club Paris Saint-Germain, and what most people now believe will inevitably be his future club Real Madrid and could still change teams before the window closes.

The silly season is absolutely living up to its name.

Ronaldo to Manchester United a done deal

CBS Sports soccer insider Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Cristiano Ronaldo has accepted the contract proposal sent by Manchester United and is on the way back to Old Trafford.

Romano on Ronaldo

Here's what our Fabrizio Romano had on the Ronaldo-to-United talks from earlier in the day.

Ronaldo's Manchester United numbers

A hero returns

Obviously, this is a huge move for United & Ronaldo himself. Significant legacy to live up to & the feelgood factor around Old Trafford will be massive. Suddenly, United become stronger contenders for multiple pieces of silverware too. Potential game changer. Obvious romantic aspect too. What a transfer window!

Manchester United makes it official

The Red Devils took to Twitter on Friday to announce the acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo touches down in Portugal

Manchester United make contact with Juventus

This one is moving fast. United are now in formal talks with Juve for Ronaldo and an official bid has been made. Pogba is not part of talks and the situation is that a two-year contract proposal has now been sent to Mendes by the Premier League giants and that City are definitively out of the race to sign the Portuguese.

It appears former teammate Rio Ferdinand was in on the developments the whole time...

Manchester City decide to pass on Ronaldo

And now, apparently City have decided not to make the deal. We're in full silly season here, but just as Ronaldo is putting on the full court press in Turin, refusing to play in matches and trying to force his way out, it appears that City have decided they just can't make a move for him work.

Manchester United enter Cristiano Ronaldo chase

Just when it looked like the Ronaldo saga was going to have a predictable ending, Manchester United have surprised the world, and seem to be considering bringing the megastar back to Old Trafford. Ronaldo first rose to stardom there under manager Alex Ferguson before being sold to Real Madrid and there have long been rumors that he might one day return. United are at least exploring the possibility of making that a reality.

Confirmed: Ronaldo will not play against Empoli

As if it were needed, confirmation has arrived from Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri that Ronaldo has told the club that he wants out. Unsurprisingly that means he won't be called upon for the game against Empoli this weekend. Allegri is offering every indication that his star player is indeed leaving.

"Yesterday Cristiano told me that he no longer has any intention to play for Juventus," the manager said in his press conference. "For this reason he will not be called up for tomorrow's game.

"Things change, it's a law of life. Juventus remains, which is the most important thing. Cristiano gave his contribution, he made himself available, now he leaves and life goes on.

"Cristiano is to be thanked for what he has done, also as an example amongst the youngsters. But as I said, we must go on."

'The story between Ronaldo and Juventus is over'

Who replaces Ronaldo at Juventus?

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Juventus star has already cleaned his locker room and is ready to join a new club. So what's Juve left to do? Di Marzio reports that the club is looking for a younger striker to kick-start this new cycle. Gabriel Jesus and Mauro Icardi are among the top options, but at this moment, that doesn't appear to be feasible for the Old Lady. A Moise Kean reunion could be in the cards, depending on what Everton does. Kean spent last season at PSG on loan and was recently red-carded in Everton's EFL Cup win over Huddersfield.

Juventus wait for Man City to make bid

CBS Sports soccer insider Fabrizio Romano has more on the Ronaldo saga, who is reporting that Juventus are waiting for Manchester City to make an official bid, which could come in the near future in hopes of reaching an agreement as soon as possible. Agent Jorge Mendes is now discussing Ronaldo's contract with Manchester City.

Ronaldo asks to leave Juventus

According to CBS Sports insider Fabrizio Romano, Cristiano Ronaldo has formerly asked to leave Juventus. The Portuguese star is looking for a summer transfer and is not expected to play in Saturday's Serie A home opener against Empoli, which you can watch on Paramount+.

Our CBS Sports insider Fabrizio Romano reports that Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has landed in Portugal in hopes of locking up personal terms between the player and Manchester City. Should be interesting to see how this plays out and whether City or Juventus budge on their current asks.

Guardiola and Ronaldo on the phone?

As we wait for Manchester City and Juventus to see eye to eye, ESPN is reporting that City boss Pep Guardiola and Ronaldo spoke on the phone on Thursday morning. Guardiola famously coached Barcelona from 2008-2012 where he was tasked to gameplan against in multiple El Clasicos once Ronaldo arrived at Real Madrid in 2009.

Latest on Ronaldo

From Fabrizio Romano:

While Juventus are still asking for €28/30m fee for Ronaldo as they won't sell him on a free, Jorge Mendes is talking directly with Manchester City and discussing about personal terms/contract. Juventus are still waiting for Man City decision about €28/30m fee.

Mendes is now in Paris

Fabrizio Romano confirms on his Twitch stream that Jorge Mendes is now in Paris after meeting with the club earlier in the day. Romano adds that Mendes being in Paris has nothing to do with PSG, and now it's up to Juventus and Manchester City to come to terms on a deal.

Was this Ronaldo's last Juve game?

Jo Ankier, Andres Cordero, Marco Messina and Matteo Bonetti discussed Ronaldo's season-opening cameo and disallowed goal during this weekend's Udinese-Juventus match.

We're a week removed from Ronaldo's Instagram take-down on "frivolous" rumors linking him to Real Madrid. Turns out Madrid may not have been the destination for CR7.

Anyone who knows me is aware of how focused I am on my work. Less talk and more action, this has been my guiding motto since the start of my career. However, in view of everything that's been said and written recently, I have to set out my position.

More than the disrespect for me as a man and as a player, the frivolous way that my future is covered in the media is disrespectful to all the clubs involved in these rumours, as well as to their players and staff.

My story at Real Madrid has been written. It's been recorded. In words and numbers, in trophies and titles, in records and in headlines. It's in the Museum at the Bernabeu Stadium and it's also in the minds of every fan of the club. And beyond what I achieved, I remember that in those nine years I had a relationship of deep affection and respect for "merengue afición", an affection and respect that I retain to this day, and that I will always cherish. I know that the true Real Madrid fans will continue to have me in their hearts, and I will have them in mine.

As well as this most recent episode in Spain, there have been frequent news and stories associating me with a number of clubs in many different Leagues, with nobody ever being concerned about trying to find out the actual truth.

I'm breaking my silence now to say that I can't allow people to keep playing around with my name. I remain focused on my career and in my work, committed and prepared for all the challenges that I have to face. Everything else? Everything else is just talk.?

Ronaldo stages exit?

Our Roger Gonzalez is hearing similar regarding Ronaldo's future at Juventus. Here's what he had to say:

"Lots of rumors circulating around Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Juventus. From a source in Italy close to the club, it's been explained to me that he is indeed leaving. Multiple reports suggest it is back to the Premier League with Manchester City."

Ronaldo has one year left in his contract

The Portuguese forward has less than one year of contract remaining. Juventus, meanwhile, don't want to lose him on a free and are asking anywhere between €25 and €30m for 36-year-old forward who spent six seasons in Manchester playing for Sir Alex Ferguson's United.
