Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. Spent a wonderful week there a few years ago talking to students and educators at the University of South Queensland. The beautiful @BrisbaneAirport sits on the southeast coast of Australia.

Launching on the next @Space_Station CRS mission, the APEX-08 study will make genetic alterations to plants to study their responses to stress. By altering the plants’ gene expression levels, scientists may be able to change how the plants respond.

Dragon Mated to Falcon, Rolled out to Launch Pad for Saturday’s Mission

James Cawley Posted on August 25, 2021

The Dragon spacecraft for SpaceX’s 23nd commercial resupply services mission is now ready for its flight to the International Space Station. On Tuesday, Aug. 24, teams transported the spacecraft from SpaceX’s processing facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station into the hangar at nearby Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A, where it was attached to the Falcon 9 rocket.

The rocket – with Dragon atop – was then rolled out to the launch pad, where it was raised to a vertical position this morning, Aug. 25, in preparation for Saturday’s launch. Liftoff of the Falcon 9 is scheduled for 3:37 a.m. EDT. Dragon will deliver a variety of NASA investigations, including one that will determine if metabolites from grape skins and seeds used in wine-making could help prevent and treat osteoporosis.

About 12 minutes after launch, Dragon will separate from the Falcon 9 rocket’s second stage and begin a carefully choreographed series of thruster firings to reach the space station. Arrival to the orbiting laboratory is planned for Sunday, Aug. 29. The spacecraft is expected to spend about a month attached to the space station before it splashes down off the coast of Florida, returning with research and cargo.

Tune in to NASA TV or the agency’s website for live coverage of mission activities, beginning Friday at noon with the prelaunch news conference. Launch day coverage, which also can be found here, starts Saturday at 3:15 a.m. EDT.

MEDIA ADVISORY M21-101

Georgia, California Students to Hear from Astronauts on Space Station

Students in Georgia and California will each have an opportunity this week to hear from astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The Earth-to-space calls will air live on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency’s website.

On Monday, Aug. 30, NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide will answer prerecorded video questions from students at The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia, beginning at 10 a.m. EDT. The Lovett School is a K-12 independent school that counts Kimbrough among its alumni. Students from Breakthrough Atlanta, a study-skills initiative for underserved students in Metro Atlanta at Lovett, will also participate in the event.

The event will be held virtually. Media interested in more information about Lovett, the questions submitted to astronauts, or other details should contact Janie Beck at 404-262-3032 x1334 or [email protected].

On Tuesday, Aug. 31, NASA astronaut Megan McArthur and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet will answer prerecorded video questions from students of the William S. Hart Union High School District in Santa Clarita, California, beginning at 1:25 p.m. The downlink is facilitated by the La Mesa Junior High School, with an overarching educational theme of “Your future will be out of this world!”

The event will be held virtually. An in-person celebration will be held at La Mesa Junior High School to coincide with the live downlink. Media interested in in more information about LaMesa, the questions submitted to astronauts, or other details of the event should contact Dave Caldwell at 661-312-2590 or [email protected]

Linking students directly to astronauts aboard the space station provides unique, authentic experiences designed to enhance student learning, performance, and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Astronauts living in space on the orbiting laboratory communicate with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston 24 hours a day through the Space Network’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellites.

For more than 20 years, astronauts have continuously lived and worked on the space station, testing technologies, performing science, and developing the skills needed to explore farther from Earth. Through Artemis, NASA will return astronauts to the Moon, with eventual human exploration of Mars. Inspiring the next generation of explorers – the Artemis Generation – ensures America will continue to lead in space exploration and discovery.

Welcome to #Hurricane, the largest city in #Putnam County, West #Virginia.

Its name originates from the English Hurricane Creek, which in turn was named after a group of trees at the mouth of the river, which were bent in one direction.

ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet takes you on a tour of the International Space Station like no other. Filmed with a 360 camera, the Space Station 360 series lets you explore for yourself alongside Thomas’s explanation – starting with Europe’s science laboratory, Columbus.

Columbus is not the Station’s largest module, but it is one of the best equipped. It is the place where European astronauts conduct most of their work on board and has an external platform that allows experiments to be exposed to the vacuum of space. In addition to science racks, Columbus offers storage space and even a new crew quarter for sleeping. Click and drag with your mouse or move your smartphone around see different angles and feel like you too are in space.

The video is in French, to activate the English subtitles, click on the CC icon at the bottom right of the YouTube player.
