Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said an investigation is underway after his administration discovered “the potential misappropriation of funds by an employee.”
Lumumba did not identify the employee, but said that person is no longer employed by the city of Jackson.
"At this time, this is still a full-scale investigation that is underway, therefore, we cannot provide any details," Lumumba said.
The mayor said he made the announcement during a briefing Tuesday with public trust and transparency in mind.
"The mayor’s city leadership team did contact our office immediately of learning of potential malfeasance," said Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens. "We subsequently launched an investigation in conjunction with not only the Auditor’s Office, but also federal partners and some of the Jackson Police Department staff, as well."
Owens said the investigation is ongoing and he is not providing additional information.
