Nationals 2020 first-round pick Cade Cavalli has been promoted from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Washington's Matt Weyrich. 106.7 The Fan's Grant Paulsen was first to report the news.

Seth Romero, Washington's first-round pick in 2017, is also moving up from Harrisburg to Rochester.

For Cavalli, moving up to Triple-A in what is his first season of professional baseball is a big deal. The 23-year-old has been in Double-A since June and entering play Tuesday, has the most strikeouts of any minor league pitcher with 151.

By moving up to Triple-A, Cavalli will have the chance to face more experienced hitters, a good test for the right-hander as he continues to move up in the Nationals' organization. Cavalli was dominant at the High-A level, posting a 1.77 ERA in seven starts before getting promoted to Double-A Harrisburg. In Harrisburg, Cavalli posted a solid 2.79 ERA in 11 starts.

"We're keeping close eyes on Cade," Nationals manager Davey Martinez said last week. "We think that he’s got a bright future in this organization for a lot of years so there’s no timetable of when you’re gonna see him here. But if he keeps continuing to grow the way he’s growing, who knows what could happen here in the future. He obviously will be here if things keep going the way it’s going. I’m not saying this year but fairly soon.”

Romero's path in the Nationals' organization has been much more of a whirlwind than Cavalli's. In spring training of 2018, he violated team policy and was sent home and not reinstated until June. He made just seven starts that season before he underwent Tommy John Surgery, which kept him out for the entire 2019 season.

Then in 2020, Romero was originally left off Washington's 60-man player pool for the coronavirus-altered season. His contract was selected in August and he made his MLB debut later that month.

In six starts at Double-A Harrisburg this season, Romero posted a 5.21 ERA over 20.1 innings pitched. However, he's started to turn the corner over his last three starts with 22 strikeouts over that span. In his last 30 minor-league innings split between low-A Fredericksburg and Double-A Harrisburg, Romero has 48 strikeouts and just nine walks.
