Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced that James White is his choice to be the city's permanent Police Chief.

According to WDIV 4, Mayor Duggan's choice will have to be approved by the Detroit City Council.

"Today, I will be sending my recommendation to Detroit City Council," Duggan said. The council members have 30 days to approve White as the permanent Chief of the Detroit Police Department.

The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners made a list of three potential candidates, all of whom were interviewed by Mayor Duggan. "I interviewed all three," Duggan said. "I felt good about all three, but I think anybody in this city who has watched the way that James White has handled himself in the last two months feels very good about where the Detroit Police Department is heading."

White was named the interim police chief by Mayor Duggan when James Craig retired on June 1. Before becoming interim police chief, White left the Detroit Police Department in 2020 to become the Michigan Department of Civil Rights director.
