Life-science developer BioMed Realty Trust acquired the vacant former corporate headquarters earlier this year.

BioMed Realty Trust’s plan to convert the former John Hancock headquarters to labs cleared a key hurdle last night with its approval from the Boston Planning and Development Agency board.

BioMed bought the 482,000-square-foot office at 601 Congress St. in Boston’s Seaport District in January, with plans to convert the vacant office into lab space by 2022. The project is BioMed’s first foray into Boston’s Seaport District. The life-science developer has a large footprint in Cambridge and a number of other projects underway in the South End and Somerville, as well as Kendall Square.

The BPDA board on Thursday evening voted to allow for lab or life-science uses at the property, versus a single-tenant office user.

The development team to convert the longtime corporate headquarters into lab space includes architecture firm CBT, R.E. Dinneen Architects & Planners Inc. and OJB Landscape Architecture.
