The Boston Red Sox have gone 6-11 during August and 9-16 since July 24.
The Red Sox held a four-game lead on the Rays, a nine-game lead on Toronto and a nine-and-a-half game lead on the Yankees on July 6. The first-place Rays now are six games ahead of Boston while the second-place Yankees own one-and-a-half-game lead on the Sox.
GM Brian O’Halloran appeared on WEEI’s The Greg Hill show this morning. He said the front office would be responsible if the club misses the postseason.
“First of all, hope that doesn’t happen. But in the end, it’s on us,” O’Halloran told The Greg Hill Show. “It’s on the front office. It’s on the baseball operations. Whatever happens on the field, the results, good or bad, we’ve been given the opportunity to do this job. We have nothing but support from ownership. We have no excuses.
“So that’s on the baseball operations leadership, myself included,” he added. “That goes for both the short-term and the longterm. Again, it’s a balance, but if we don’t make the playoffs, we’ll be very disappointed because we think we have a good team. We put ourselves in a position where we have a chance to make the postseason and that’s true right now. We were in a better spot at the deadline. But we’re still in a spot where we have a chance to do this and our expectations are that we’ll battle down the stretch and hopefully, get there. But in the end, yeah, all the results are on us, on the baseball operations leadership.”
The Red Sox open a three-game home series against the Texas Rangers on Friday. They then play three games at Fenway Park vs. the Minnesota Twins before heading out on the road to Cleveland and Tampa Bay.
