ATL 12, MIA 2; Adam Duvall bites former team, Braves cruise to win

The Atlanta Braves, once trailing, 2-1, put up seven runs in a frustrating fourth inning for Don Mattingly’s Marlins.

Adam Duvall returned to loanDepot park Monday night as a member of the Atlanta Braves, opening the first act of a three-game set against his former squad, the Miami Marlins. Duvall’s Braves, using a seven-run fourth inning to their advantage, breezed past the Marlins, 12-2.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., for the second consecutive game, homered, taking the very first pitch from Touki Toussaint 443 feet in the upper deck of the right-field seats. One inning later, Isan Díaz, with two outs and nobody on base, ripped a 416-foot solo shot to right to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead, a lead that quickly evaporated.

Left-hander Braxton Garrett was roughed up for the second consecutive outing. After coughing up five earned on eight hits August 10 against the San Diego Padres, Garrett walked the bases loaded in the opening frame, but did manage to escape having allowed just one run. Garrett’s pitchers were all over the place, finishing with 77 (39 strikes, 38 balls) and six walks, including a five-pitch walk to the opposing pitcher in Toussaint, a Pembroke Pines, Florida, native.

Duvall, whom the Marlins traded to the Braves on July 30, smacked a two-run home run off reliever Paul Campbell during that seven-run barrage. Campbell, three batters prior, gave up a three-run home run to Freddie Freeman.

Jorge Guzman, making his 2021 debut for the Marlins in relief, punched out Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley to record two quick outs. However, Guzman allowed a soft single to Dansby Swanson, walked Duvall and then Travis d’Arnaud’s two-run double gave Atlanta a 10-run advantage.

The Marlins pitching staff as a whole issued a season-high 11 walks—that’s just one shy of matching the franchise record for most in a non-extra-inning game. The season series between these NL East adversaries is now even at seven wins apiece.

The page turns to Sandy Alcantara Tuesday night, who secured the victory at Petco Park this past Wednesday afternoon after seven shutout innings.
