The right-back position has been a worry at Celtic for a while now. But the recent signs surrounding the situation have been very positive to say the least.

It has been a while since both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed left the club in the middle of the previous campaign. Jonjoe Kenny came in on loan to play there for the second half of the 2020/21 season.

Anthony Ralston has stepped into the role this season and has been fantastic recently. He has most probably been one of the club’s best players over the past several weeks, but a signing is still needed there with not much depth in the position.

There have been a number of right-backs whose names have been brought up recently as potential transfer targets for the Hoops. One of them is Manchester City’s Yan Couto, who is believed to be available on loan this summer. Interestingly, the 19-year-old was in attendance at Parkhead for the Hoops’ second leg of their UEFA Europa League third round qualifier against FK Jablonec. Ange Postecoglou’s side ended up winning 3-0 on the night.

Major twist in Celtic’s transfer chase for Couto

Some rumours had suggested that Couto was keen on a move to Parkhead after attending the game. But now, it looks like that might not have been the case after all.

As reported by Sky Sports, the club’s final push to sign Couto has come to nothing. The player remains unconvinced and is also wanted by Braga.

As a result, it looks like the Hoops will have to turn their attention elsewhere. It is clear that they need to sign a right-back this summer but have not been able to do so yet. Fortunately, the brilliant form of Ralston has made things easier for the club and they can take their time before making the right signing for Postecoglou’s squad.
