Elon Musk responded on Wednesday to a report that Twitter leaped to comply with the Indian government’s demands that it suppress a documentary critical of the country’s prime minister. “First I’ve heard,” Mr. Tweet, as Musk has now taken to calling himself on the platform, tweeted in response to a user calling him out on the “outright censorship” his company apparently participated in. “It is not possible for me to fix every aspect of Twitter worldwide overnight, while still running Tesla and SpaceX, among other things,” he added. The comments follow a Tuesday report in The Intercept which found that...

Al-Sudani was “a key operative and facilitator for ISIS’s global network,” according to senior administration officials that spoke with The New York Times. The special raid into Somalia’s mountainous, northern territory was months in the making, according to news outlet Voice of America. “Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan,” said Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in a statement. “No civilians were harmed as a result of the operations.”Read it at The New York Times
Trump’s Russia Probe Led to Criminal Investigation Into Trump Himself: NYT
In 2019, at the behest of Donald Trump, Attorney General William Barr asked a prosecutor named John Durham to look into the FBI’s probe on possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, in the hopes of proving the then-president’s assertion that it was the “single greatest witch hunt” in U.S. history correct. Instead, according to a Thursday report from The New York Times, Barr and Durham received a tip from Italian authorities that resulted in the Justice Department quietly opening a criminal inquiry into Trump himself. As special counsel, Durham reportedly pressed Italian officials to share any role they may have had in igniting the FBI’s investigation. In response, Italy “unexpectedly offered a potentially explosive tip linking Mr. Trump to certain suspected financial crimes,” the Times reported. Barr and Durham, who had become good drinking buddies by this point, decided the tip was both credible and serious. The attorney general then asked Durham to open a criminal investigation that included examining Trump’s possible wrongdoing. The nature of the Italian tip is unclear, but no charges were ever brought by Durham in relation to it.Read it at The New York Times
Georgia Guv Activates 1,000 National Guard Troops Amid ‘Cop City’ Protests
Gov. Brian Kemp (R) declared a 15-day state of emergency in Georgia on Thursday amid the civil unrest that followed the killing of an environmental activist by police officers. The order also authorized the use of up to 1,000 National Guard troops, making them available to respond to any “unlawful assemblage, overt threats of violence, disruption of the peace, and danger existing to persons and property.” His declaration alleges that, during the Jan. 21 protest, “masked activists threw rocks, launched fireworks and burned a police vehicle in front of the Atlanta Police Foundation office building.” Six people were arrested in the wake of the demonstrations, which ignited in response to the Jan. 18 death of Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, an activist known as Tortuguita. Terán was part of the movement resisting the creation of a police training complex, pejoratively nicknamed “Cop City,” within a 300-acre forest in Atlanta. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that Terán shot and wounded a state trooper in the chest prior to his death. Read it at FOX 5 Atlanta
Jeffries Aide Refutes Elon Musk’s Capitol ‘Meeting’ Claim: Reports
An aide to Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) threw cold water on an earlier claim by Elon Musk that he’d had a meeting with the minority leader at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, saying that their interaction was unexpected and brief. The aide told CNN reporter Oliver Darcy that Jeffries had been meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in his office when Musk rolled up. “They didn't have a meeting. They met,” the aide said, according to Darcy. “It was mostly just an introduction.” The refutation came in response to Musk’s earlier tweet, in which he claimed, “Just met with @SpeakerMcCarthy & @RepJeffries to discuss ensuring that [Twitter] is fair to both parties.” It was unclear whether Musk’s meeting with McCarthy had been pre-planned, but the speaker told reporters afterwards that the Twitter chief “came to wish me ‘happy birthday,’” according to The Hill. McCarthy added: “We’ve been friends for years.” An unnamed source told CNN that the subject of Twitter came up while Musk was in McCarthy’s office, but did not elaborate.Read it at The Hill
Elaine Chao Breaks Her Silence on Trump’s Racist Rants
Donald Trump’s former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao took a rare swing at her old boss on Wednesday, addressing the racist attacks he keeps lobbing at her. “Does Coco Chow have anything to do with Joe Biden’s Classified Documents being sent and stored in Chinatown?,” Trump wrote Monday in yet another deranged post on his social-media platform. It was the latest in a string of attacks, in which Trump has blamed the Taiwanese native for her husband Sen. Mitch McConnell’s stances on China. “When I was young, some people deliberately misspelled or mispronounced my name. Asian Americans have worked hard to change that experience for the next generation,” Chao said in a statement to Politico. “He doesn’t seem to understand that, which says a whole lot more about him than it will ever say about Asian Americans.”Read it at POLITICO

Meta, the parent company behind Facebook and Instagram, announced on Wednesday that they would be reinstating former president Donald Trump’s accounts “in the coming weeks,” reversing a two-year ban handed down in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. “We've always believed that Americans should be able to hear from the people who want to lead the country,” Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, told Axios. “We don't want to stand in the way of that.” The switch-up has the potential to impact the 2024 election, as Trump regains advertising access to his tens...
