A large group of people gathered at the Oklahoma Capitol on Saturday for a rally against mandates on masks and the COVID-19 vaccine.
The rally, called the Oklahoma Freedom Rally, is being held in the Capitol rotunda. When KOCO 5 arrived, we found a long line of people waiting to get into the Capitol for the rally.
Once inside, many unmasked people filled the rotunda with signs while individuals gave speeches and led chants.
The rally is being held as COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations continue to rise while the delta variant tears through Oklahoma. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone, including fully vaccinated people, wear masks indoors in public in almost all of Oklahoma because of the extent of the state’s COVID-19 spread.
Health Commissioner Dr. Lance Frye broke with the CDC, recommending instead that people make their own risk assessments.
"There are, again, certain parts of our state where, you know, there’s just – they just don’t have the population density and if they’re – if they are fully vaccinated and feel like they’re in a safe environment, then I wouldn’t – I’m not going to say that they have to wear a mask," he said.
The health department is drafting new emergency rules for hospitals regarding case reporting. But no state of emergency is expected from the governor.
