Italian Express Pizzeria in East Boston has closed

A Jeffries Point pizzeria that once appeared on “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” has permanently closed.

Italian Express Pizzeria shared Thursday on social media that its time has come to an end.

“We regret to inform you that Italian Express Pizzeria is now closed because of issues due to the pandemic,” read the post, which was published on Facebook and Instagram. “Thank you for your many years of patronage and support.”

Owners Jim Iannuzzi and Jonathan Harker did not immediately respond to Boston.com’s request for comment.

Located at 336 Sumner St., the pizzeria was known for its vast selection of made-to-order pizzas, along with pasta dishes, hot and cold subs, and other entrées. Many of the restaurant’s recipes were passed down from Iannuzzi’s grandmother. The pizzeria was also featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives,” with Iannuzzi teaching host Guy Fieri how to make haddock margarita with pan-roasted potatoes.

In response to the news of its closing, fans shared their fond memories.

“Such sad news,” Mary-Ellen Rodrigues wrote. “Jim and John, you ran such a fabulous restaurant. Be proud of all that you have accomplished.”

“Jim and Jonathan, wishing you both the best,” Levi Smith said. “I’m absolutely devastated. Thank you for all the memories, but most importantly, the best Italian food I’ve eaten. I hope there’s a way to reopen in the near future. Until then.”

And Lori Bartts shared: “So sad to hear. When we were in Boston for vacation we ate here 3 times because it was SO good! We have looked forward to going back when we made it back up there.”
