Mary Trump: My uncle ‘revealed the Republican Party to be what it is’

Former President Trump’s niece Mary Trump, a prominent critic of his, on Monday said that he “held up a mirror” and “revealed the Republican Party to be what it is.”

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin asked Mary Trump to expand on what she meant when she wrote in her new book that critics who say her uncle does not represent the U.S. are wrong.

“I think if Donald served any constructive purpose at all, it was that. That he held up a mirror, and he revealed the Republican Party to be what it is and has been for a very long time,” Trump said.

“And when I say this is exactly who we are, I mean that, after four years of cruelty and mass death for which Donald is directly responsible, 74 million people still voted for him,” she added. “We’re dealing with millions, tens of millions of people who seem perfectly comfortable with the end of democracy in our country simply so their minority can stay in power and it’s quite frightening.”

Trump, a clinical psychologist, published a book on her uncle last year, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man,” which sold nearly 1 million copies in preorders and first-day sales.

She is set to publish her second book on the former president, titled, “The Reckoning: Our Nation’s Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal” on Aug. 17.

When she announced her second book, Trump said it would “examine America’s national trauma” from her uncle’s presidency and policies.
