Man wanted in deadly Lancaster County shooting surrenders at sheriff’s office

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators said the man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting outside a Lancaster County home earlier this month has been taken into custody after turning himself in to authorities Tuesday morning.

Deputies were called just before 5 a.m. on Aug. 1 to the scene on Railroad Avenue, off North Matson Street near Kershaw. That’s where they found 46-year-old Kenneth Morehead, Jr. lying next to the front passenger door of a Honda Accord parked behind the house.

Morehead had been shot several times, deputies said. He was flown to the hospital but did not survive.

The driver and others in the house told deputies they heard several gunshots and when they ran outside they found Morehead lying next to the car. No one else was injured.

Detectives said Morehead was the front seat passenger in the Honda, which was driven to the house by another man. The driver went inside the house and Morehead waited for him outside, standing next to the car.

On Monday, deputies said arrest warrants had been issued charging 21-year-old Timothy “Tim Tim” Asantee McCain with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the shooting.

“We’re in a full court press looking for McCain to arrest him on these warrants. I encourage anybody who knows where McCain is and anybody who knows anything about this case to contact us. If we find out folks have been helping McCain avoid arrest, their actions will be investigated and charges will be made as appropriate. Anonymous information is welcomed,” Faile said on Monday.

The next day, officials said McCain appeared with an attorney in the lobby of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office around 10:30 a.m. and was taken into custody. Warrants charging him with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime were served and he was transported to the Lancaster County Detention Center.

“We are thankful McCain did the right thing by turning himself in,” said Faile. “We are still actively investigating this case and gathering additional information.”
