Simone Biles has withdrawn from the vault and uneven bars event finals at the Tokyo Olympics.
USA Gymnastics said in a statement Friday evening that the decorated gymnast made the decision “after further consultation with medical staff.”
MyKayla Skinner, who placed fourth in vault during qualifications, will compete in the vault finals alongside Jade Carey, who had the second-highest score.
Biles will “continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether to compete in the finals for floor exercise and beam,” USA Gymnastics said Friday.
“We remain in awe of Simone, who continues to handle this situation with courage and grace and all of the athletes who have stepped up during these unexpected circumstances,” the organization said.
The decision follows Biles’s withdrawal from the individual all-around competition and the team final to focus on her mental health.
American gymnast Sunisa Lee won the gold medal for the gymnastics all-around, continuing a decades-long streak for American gymnasts taking home the top prize. Brazil took the silver medal and Russia won bronze.
Team USA won a silver medal in the team final, while Russia won gold.
The women’s vault and uneven bars finals are scheduled to take place Sunday. The women’s floor exercise final is scheduled for Monday and the balance beam final will be Tuesday.
