Body of grandmother who drowned in Carney Lake recovered

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — The body of a 52-year-old grandmother was recovered from Carney Lake on Saturday evening after she had drowned Friday evening, according to Sergeant Darren Moss with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was reportedly found by a boater.

Firefighters with Key Peninsula Fire said they were called to the lake after a group reported hearing someone else had gone under as the lake sits on a boundary between Kitsap and Pierce counties.

Rescue divers searched for the woman for more than two hours but could not find her. The search was called off, and authorities switched to a recovery mission.

Sgt. Moss said a young boy and his grandmother were swimming, and the woman had gone under. The boy was reportedly OK.

The identity of the victim has not been released, and the medical examiner’s office will determine the exact cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
