The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Jake Marisnick from the Chicago Cubs, according to published reports on Friday.

Reports have San Diego giving up minor league right-hander Anderson Espinoza in the deal.

The acquisition of Marisnick adds to San Diego’s outfield depth.

Marisnick was batting .227 with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 65 games in his first season with the Cubs.

The 30-year-old Marisnick has a .229 career average with 61 homers and 205 RBIs in 766 games with the Miami Marlins (2013-14), Houston Astros (2014-19), New York Mets (2020) and Cubs.

Marisnick joins All-Star second baseman/outfielder Adam Frazier (Pittsburgh Pirates) and right-handed reliever Daniel Hudson (Washington Nationals) as players acquired by San Diego leading up to the trade deadline. The Padres didn’t address their suspect starting pitching but were in the bidding for Nationals All-Star right-hander Max Scherzer before Washington agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 23-year-old Espinoza was once a top prospect with the Boston Red Sox and Padres but has been plagued by arm issues, including two Tommy John surgeries. He was 0-1 with a 5.02 ERA in 12 starts with Class-A Fort Wayne this season.
