Kim Kardashian receives cease-and-desist warning after attempting to file trademark for 'SKKN' as new name for beauty line formerly KKW Beauty

She was rumored to be changing her KKW Beauty brand to drop the 'W' after filing for divorce from estranged husband Kanye West in February.

But now Kim Kardashian has hit a bump in the road after attempting to trademark 'SKKN' as her new brand name - as it is already owned by another company. 

TMZ reports that Kim, 41, has been slapped with a cease-and-desist over the use of the name, creating a legal headache for the star. 

The outlet claims the issue was brought up by Beauty Concepts LLC, who have already been in touch with the KUWTK star's lawyers. 

Per the report, the company has made it clear in legal documents that they operate both a website and various social media handles under the SKKN name.

The SKKN+ brand, owned by Cyndie Lunsford, mainly provides salon and skincare services. 

They also claimed that they had applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this past March in order to legally register a logo for the brand.

According to the media outlet, Kardashian had previously filed to trademark SKKN BY KIM before the company ever did, although Beauty Concepts also took issue with the filing.

Beauty Concepts LLC's grievance is based on the fact that if the reality star were to obtain a trademark for the name, it would create confusion over her products and the company's.

They also claimed that they had invested an extraordinary amount of effort into marketing SKKN+ services over the past few years.

TMZ previously reported that Kim's collaborators had gained control of SKKN.com and various @SKKN social media handles this past December.

Kardashian's lawyer, Michael G. Rhodes, spoke to the media outlet and expressed that, although her team does not want to interfere with Beauty Concepts LLC's practices, they are still legally allowed to use the SKKN name.

'We certainly appreciate and support small businesses, and our hat is off to Ms. Lunsford. But the question at hand is one of trademark law and we've not done anything deserving of legal action by her,' he said.

The lawyer also said that allowing TMZ to view the letter was a hindrance to both sides and remarked that the two parties would have a meeting regarding the matter. 

'We are disappointed that she has chosen to run to the media knowing that we were scheduling a call for tomorrow, requested by her attorney. So while disagreeing with the letter, we're hopeful that we can smooth things over once both sides speak,' he said. 

Kardashian has previously encountered legal issues regarding her entrepreneurial efforts, most notably over the former name of her shapewear brand, Skims.

The company was originally called Kimono upon its June of 2019 launch, which generated a swift pushback from consumers, many of whom accused the entrepreneur of cultural appropriation.

A hashtag called #KimOhNo was created by Twitter users who were concerned about the line's name, and the mayor of Kyoto wrote a letter to persuade the influencer to change the brand's moniker.

The Japanese trade minister, Hiroshige Seko, later announced that he would be sending officials for a meeting with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office regarding the matter.

Kardashian responded to the controversy that July and announced that she and her team were actively working on changing the company's name.

The following month, it was announced that the shapewear brand would begin operating under the Skims moniker, which it has done ever since.
