Giants acquire Cubs All-Star slugger Kris Bryant ahead of trade deadline

Once the New York Mets landed Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez Friday afternoon, they were out on Chicago slugger Kris Bryant.

Enter the San Francisco Giants. The first-place club linked with Bryant in rumors earlier in the day that seemingly got the job done minutes before the 4 p.m. trade deadline.

ESPN's Jeff Passan was first to report the Giants are acquiring the four-time All-Star and 2016 National League Most Valuable Player. Bryant departs the rebuilding Cubs for the NL West leaders batting .267 with 18 home runs and 51 RBI on the season.

As Maria Guardado noted for the league website, Bryant could see time at first base, third base and in the outfield for his new employer.

The Giants begin the weekend at 64-38 and three games ahead of the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the division standings.

Chicago, meanwhile, parted ways with Bryant, Baez, Anthony Rizzo and Craig Kimbrel, among others, before the deadline.
