Accused of trespass: Reps Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Louie Gohmert blocked from entering DC jail while trying to visit accused January 6 rioters 

• Gohmert, Gaetz, Gosar and Greene tried to visit detention facility on Thursday
• Footage showed Gohmert and Greene being intercepted by a guard while they tried to enter the building 
• Greene told the group she has 'great concerns' if the attitude is any indication of how they're treating their prisoners inside 
• More than 535 people have been charged in taking part in the January 6 riots where protesters stormed the US Capitol 

A group of House Republicans were accused of trespass by a detention facility in Washington D.C. while trying to visit some of the people held over the January 6 Capitol riots.

Louie Gohmert, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene attempted to visit some of those arrested following the unrest in the capital. 

Footage showed Gohmert, of Texas, and Greene, of Georgia, being intercepted by a guard while they tried to enter the building. 

The pair were told they were obstructing the entrance to the facility, and Greene told the group she has 'great concerns' if the attitude is any indication of how they're treating their prisoners inside, Mediaite reported. 

Gohmert said: 'If they can consider us trespassers — [we] fund this facility, have top-secret clearance...

'We do inspect facilities, and I've never, ever — in the years I've been in Congress — ever run into an issue like this until this administration took over.' 

More than 535 people have been charged in taking part in the January 6 violence, when Donald Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in an unsuccessful attempt to stop Congress from certifying Democratic President Joe Biden's election win. 

Five people died on the day of the violence and the day after, including a Capitol Police officer. 

Two police officers who took part in the defense of the Capitol later took their own lives. More than a hundred police officers were injured. 

Earlier this month, Trump praised his supporters as 'peaceful', 'patriots' and 'great people' while condemning the fatal police shooting of 'innocent, wonderful' Ashli Babbitt. 

The former president fondly remembered the Capitol insurrection during an appearance on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, where he said the MAGA fans who gathered that morning to hear him speak before marching on Congress were filled with 'faith and spirit and love'. 

However, he acknowledged one of five deaths linked to the riots — that of Babbitt, a former Air Force veteran who was shot dead by an unnamed Capitol Police officer as she tried to climb through a broken door leading to the House Speaker's Lobby. 

In April, the Justice Department announced that no charges would be brought against the officer. 

Describing his 'Stop the Steal' rally that preceded the siege on Congress, Trump said a 'tremendous number of people' came out to hear his mild-mannered speech'.
