Romance scam: Georgia man accused of stealing $50K from elderly victim

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County man has been indicted on several charges relating to an alleged romance scam.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said that Borin Khoun, of Lawrenceville, stole over $50,000 from a senior citizen who lived in California in an online romance scam.

“Our Prosecution Division is committed to stopping criminals who perpetrate identity theft and financial fraud,” Carr said. “People who prey on older, at-risk adults and try to capitalize on their vulnerability or loneliness must be held accountable. We appreciate the Cyber Fraud Task Force for their work and referral on this case and others like it.”

Authorities alleged Khoun took the money from the victim over several days in November 2020.

Carr said this case was investigated by the Cyber Fraud Task Force, which is comprised of local, state, and federal law enforcement officials – including dedicated lawyers from the Office of the Attorney General’s Prosecution Division.
