Georgia deputy coroner responds to call drunk in county vehicle, charged with DUI, GSP says

MADISON COUNTY, Ga. — A deputy coroner is Madison County is facing a DUI charge after responding to a call of a dead body while intoxicated.

Georgia State Patrol troopers were called to 7070 US-29 North on Wednesday to assist the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on a call of a body being found.

Troopers then smelled alcohol on Scarborough’s breath and asked him to preform a Field Sobriety Test.

Deputies reported that Deputy Coroner John Davis Scarborough, 61, arrived to the scene in a county vehicle. They said they believed he was drunk because of the “overwhelming odor” of alcohol coming from him.

Due to his performance during the test, troopers concluded that he was intoxicated.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

He was taken to the Madison County Jail. Jail records show he has since been released.
