First lady Jill Biden left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Thursday evening after undergoing a procedure on her foot to remove an object she stepped on that apparently became lodged.
Biden’s press secretary Michael LaRosa said in a statement that the first lady “underwent a successful procedure on her left foot to flush out debris from a puncture wound,” according to a White House pool report.
LaRosa said it is unclear what the object was that caused the puncture.
“The wound is now clean, free of infection and it is anticipated that it will heal nicely. She and the president will depart Walter Reed en route to the White House shortly,” LaRosa said.
Biden stepped on an object on the beach in Hawaii last week. The first lady visited Hawaii on Sunday after leading the U.S. delegation to the Tokyo Olympics.
While in Hawaii, the first lady visited a vaccination clinic at Waipahu High School, touring the facility before giving remarks. She then joined military families at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for a barbecue.
Biden returned to Washington, D.C., on Monday.
President Biden joined his wife for the procedure on Thursday, leaving for the military hospital in Bethesda, Md., just outside D.C., after giving remarks at the White House on the coronavirus pandemic.
