An indictment made public Wednesday adds a murder charge against Shawn Michael Chock in the death of 58-year-old Jeremy Barrett.

Barrett was one of those injured on June 19 when Chock sped into a crowd gathered for the annual 58-mile Bike the Bluff race in Show Low, a mountain city about three hours northeast of Phoenix, authorities say.

Chock is also charged with aggravated assault of nine other people, leaving the scene of an accident and fleeing from law enforcement.

He previously pleaded not guilty to some of the charges, though he hasn't yet entered a plea on the murder charge.

Hunter T. Lewis, an attorney representing Chock, declined to comment on the indictment.

Arizona cyclist Jeremy Barrett, 58, died on July 10, three weeks after being injured when a driver plowed his truck into a group of riders taking part in a race, of which he was one
Barrett was making a good recovery following massive internal injuries and broken bones but his condition suddenly took a turn for the worse

After plowing into the crowd, Chock hit a a telephone pole, and backed out of the crowd as cyclists pounded on the truck's windows, screaming for him to get out, witnesses said. He then drove down the road, turned around and headed back toward the cyclists before driving away, witnesses said.

Police shot Chock at a nearby hardware store. He was charged after being released from the hospital and remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.

Barrett's condition had been improving with surgery, and doctors in Flagstaff planned to transport him to Tucson. But a friend has said Barrett suffered a stroke resulting in another setback as he was fighting to survive and died on July 10.

Barrett, who spent parts of his life in Zimbabwe and Australia, was well-known in the cycling community for welcoming new riders and hosting bicyclists who were training in southern Arizona, friends said.

Tony Quinones, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, told the New York Times he was about six minutes into the Bike the Bluff charity race in Show Low, near Phoenix, when the incident happened

Shawna Glazer, who claimed to have been at the scene of the crash and comforted Barrett before help arrived, wrote in a post that the 58-year-old man was more concerned with the well-being of his fellow riders than with his own condition.

'What amazes me most about Jeremy is that despite his tremendous injuries and confusion of being hit with a pickup truck, he asked me where his friends were,' she wrote.

'He wanted to know if they were ok and if they were also hit. In that moment he showed me what it truly meant to be selfless. This man's last thoughts and questions were about the wellbeing of others!'

Shortly after the crash cycling gear including shoes, helmets and water bottles littered what had become a blood-stained road. Bicycles were shattered to pieces.

Tony Quinones, a cyclist who saw the crash, said some riders wondered at first whether the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. But Quinones said he saw the man deliberately accelerate toward the cyclists.

'He went right at us,' Quinones said.

Quinones told the New York Times he was riding in the race with other male cyclists aged 55 and over when he spotted the pickup truck driving in the opposite direction in the opposite lane.

The witness said he believed the incident was a targeted attack.

'I don't know who the heck this guy is, or what his motive was,' he said.

'But he intentionally did not go left into a parking lot.

'He drove his truck directly and intentionally into our group, and you could hear him accelerate until he hit that telephone pole.'

Another witness said he saw the incident unfold within the first mile and a half of the men's race.

Mike Godwin, who owns the Cycle Mania bike shop in Show Low with his wife Carol, said cars were allowed to share the road with cyclists in the race.
