FULTON COUNTY, Ga — Fulton County’s chairman Robb Pitts wants to make masks mandatory for anyone entering a county building, even if they are vaccinated.

He went a step further and said county workers who do not follow the steps to control the virus should be fired.

“I think we have to take this thing seriously, there’s no doubt. It’s crystal clear cases are up, hospitalizations are up and deaths are up,” Pitts said.

At next Wednesday’s commissioner’s meeting, Pitts will make the proposal. If the workers are unwilling to vaccinate, then Pitts proposed options.

“You will have to be tested and show proof of a negative test every 48 hours, otherwise face termination of employment — it is that serious,” Pitts said.

Erin Thomas, a former nurse, likes Pitts’ idea, including the mandatory vaccination.

According to Fulton County’s Emergency Management Agency, there were 1,072 new COVID-19 cases last week, and cases are up almost 200% in two weeks.

More than 50% of the county’s 5,200 employees have been vaccinated, so Pitts proposes that his plan be done in stages: first the mask mandate, and then an incentive program to encourage employees to get the shot.

“And the cash prize would be up to $10,000,” Pitts said. “So, at the county, we have been pretty aggressive with our employees.”
