Ranking the 20 best NHL free agents in 2021

It’s been a few short weeks since the Tampa Bay Lightning became back-to-back Stanley Cup champions and less than a week since the Seattle Kraken assembled their first full roster. Hockey fans are now facing down the last major calendar event before the offseason kicks into full gear: free agency.

The 2021 NHL free agency period is set to be a pretty explosive one. Between the deep free agency pool available and general managers and players looking to change things up after a shortened NHL season, we are likely to see a lot of quality players change hands in the next few weeks.

Even before the free agency period, we’ve seen a lot of movement already this offseason. The Philadelphia Flyers shipped out a bunch of roster mainstays and brought in Ryan Ellis, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Cam Atkinson. Seth Jones is officially Chicago bound from Columbus and Sam Reinhart is now a member of the Florida Panthers. The NHL offseason has only just begun, and there is sure to be more trades made in the coming weeks.

With the NHL’s free agency set to begin on July 28 at 12 p.m. ET, we’ve ranked the top 20 UFAs teams will likely be vying for here for your convenience.

D Dougie Hamilton, Carolina Hurricanes

A lot of teams will likely be inquiring about the services of Dougie Hamilton during this free agency period. The 28-year-old defenseman is in the height of his prime and will likely be a rich buy for whichever team pays the final asking price, but in return will be netting an offensively-gifted top-pair defenseman.

2
F Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado Avalanche

The longer contract talks stall between the Avalanche and captain Gabriel Landeskog, the more it seems the 28-year-old will be moving on from Colorado. On offense, Landeskog may be a step below Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon on the scoresheet, but the forward still has a lot to give as a 200-foot player and would be quite an invaluable pickup nonetheless.

Update: Landeskog has re-signed in Colorado for eight more years.

3
F David Krejci, Boston Bruins

Between Krejci and a few others on this list, the Bruins could be looking quite different by the time the 2021-22 season rolls around. Krejci is a skilled playmaker yet is also defensively sound, making him a top grab for a team on the rise or a contender looking for a top-six forward.

4
G Tuukka Rask, Boston Bruins

Tuukka Rask has been the backbone of the Bruins for the last eight or so seasons. While there’s no real reason to see Boston moving on from a goaltender they’ve had for the last 14 seasons with no real replacement behind him, Rask’s status as a free agent heading into Wednesday is intriguing if they can’t come to terms on a new deal.

5
G Phillip Grubauer, Colorado Avalanche

Arguably the top goaltender on the market with an actual chance to move to a new team this offseason, Grubauer has earned the starter’s net after his time in Colorado. Teams will likely have to pay Grubauer a sizable raise from his previous $3.33 million AAV contract from last season, but in return one lucky team will be getting a bonafide goaltender who can go the distance.

6
D Tyson Barrie, Edmonton Oilers

Tyson Barrie was a benefactor of the Connor McDavid effect out in Edmonton this year, with 40 assists in 56 games played. Still, Barrie is an offensive-first, defense-later defenseman that can contribute in the points department but will have to be sheltered on the back end to be effective.

7
D Alec Martinez, Vegas Golden Knights

Martinez is yet another blue liner who should be sheltered defensively, but also brings offense and playmaking ability. The 33-year-old had his best offensive production since the 2017-18 season last year and his services will likely be in high demand this offseason.

Update: Martinez has re-signed in Vegas on a three-year deal.

8
F Zach Hyman, Toronto Maple Leafs

Zach Hyman is all but assured to become a member of the Edmonton Oilers once free agency opens, but there’s still a possibility he hits the open market. Part of a Maple Leafs core for the last six seasons, Hyman brings top quality even strength scoring with surprising playmaking ability to a team’s top-six.

9
F Brandon Saad, Colorado Avalanche

Though Brandon Saad has declined in offensive production over the years, the 28-year-old can still hold his own in the middle of a lineup. Between his scoring touch and veteran presence, Saad has a lot to bring to a NHL team and it’s a bit surprising that he hasn’t been in conversation as much over the recent days.

10
F Blake Coleman, Tampa Bay Lightning

The great breakup of the Tampa Bay Lightning continues, as Blake Coleman will test the free agent waters this offseason. Coming off back-to-back Stanley Cups, Coleman brings the offense while also grading out well analytically, making him a great player at both ends of the ice.

11
D Ryan Suter, Minnesota Wild

It was surprising to see the Wild buy out Ryan Suter and Zach Parise earlier this offseason, given how entrenched they were within the Minnesota system. Of the two, Suter is the more intriguing free agent with what he still has left to give. At 36, Suter is a risk for falling off a cliff analytically, but he can still play top-four minutes while maintaining his playmaking style of hockey.

12
F Phillip Danault, Montreal Canadiens

After a breakout year with the Canadiens, Phillip Danault will be testing the market. Danault showcased his shutdown ability over the course of the playoffs, matching up against tough opponents and getting the better of them the majority of the time. Though his offense leaves a lot to be desired, any team that takes a flyer on Danault will be doing so for his defensive abilities alone.

13
G Linus Ullmark, Buffalo Sabres

Given how disastrous the Sabres have been, it’s a wonder that Linus Ullmark maintained a .917 save percentage in 20 games last season. Ullmark seems to grade out more as a backup than a true starter in the NHL, but he’s a great pickup for a team in need of depth in goal.

14
F Kyle Palmieri, New York Islanders

After being the big trade deadline acquisition in the regular season, Kyle Palmieri is back on the market. Known for adding depth scoring, Palmieri had a bit of a down season last year but improved drastically in the playoffs with seven goals and nine points total in 19 games. At the end of the day, Palmieri will bring decent scoring and defensive help to the middle of a team’s lineup.

15
F Jaden Schwartz, St. Louis Blues

Jaden Schwartz may not be the annual 20-goal scorer he was in the past, but he still has the potential even off a down year with just eight goals in 40 games. Outside of Landeskog, Schwartz may have the biggest offensive upside, but it all depends on if he returns to form.

16
F Tomas Tatar, Montreal Canadiens

Tomas Tatar should get more opportunities than he’s been presented with given his regular season numbers. With 30 points in 50 games for Montreal in the regular season, it was a surprise to see him scratched for the majority of the playoffs. Even still, Tatar projects to be a top-six player and a great addition for the right price for a NHL team.

17
D Mike Reilly, Boston Bruins

Another Bruin who could be on the move is defenseman Mike Reilly, who excels defensively at even strength while adding much-needed offense, even in limited minutes.

18
D David Savard, Tampa Bay Lightning

The last defenseman on this list, David Savard is a big right-handed defenseman coming off winning a Stanley Cup with the Lightning. Mostly used as a shutdown blue liner with little to no offensive production, Savard will likely be on many NHL teams radars this offseason.

19
F Nick Foligno, Toronto Maple Leafs

After being the Maple Leafs big acquisition at the trade deadline, Nick Foligno will hit free agency this summer. Known mostly for his grinding style of hockey, Foligno may not add a lot of offense to a team’s lineup, but his forechecking skills are still useful in a team’s bottom-six.

20
G Petr Mrazek, Carolina Hurricanes

Rounding out this list is Hurricanes goaltender Petr Mrazek, who is coming off a .923 season after playing 12 games. Mrazek has had an up and down NHL career, but would make a fine back up for any team wanting goaltending depth.

21
Honorable mention: F Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

It’s highly unlikely, bordering on impossible, that Alex Ovechkin reaches free agency this summer, given his star status in Washington. But since he is a pending free agent, he gets an honorable mention on this list.

Update: Ovechkin has re-signed with the Capitals on a five-year deal.
