San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance‘s training camp arrival was briefly held up while the finer points of his rookie contract were worked out, but on Wednesday, the two sides came to an agreement on a fully-guaranteed deal.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news, The Athletic‘s David Lombardi broke down the key details of Lance’s contract:
It’s not uncommon for offset language to hold up a top draft pick from reporting to training camp at least for a little bit. Thankfully, Lance doesn’t have to worry about that. Only New York Jets QB Zach Wilson, selected one spot ahead of Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft at No. 2 overall, remains unsigned.
Lance is in a much better situation than Wilson is, though. Whereas no one in the Jets quarterback room has ever thrown an NFL pass and Wilson needs every single camp rep he can get to prepare for the steep NFL learning curve, Lance is firmly entrenched as QB2 behind veteran Jimmy Garoppolo.
Because Jimmy G went 13-3 in his last full season as a starter and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, he’s being given the reins of the offense once again. That’s in spite of his inability to stay healthy in his other two full years in San Francisco, and the fact that the Niners traded multiple first-round picks to move up and draft Lance at No. 3.
Although 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has insisted there’s no QB competition between Garoppolo and Lance, that could change if the North Dakota State product shines in his maiden NFL training camp.
Eventually, San Francisco will move off Garoppolo in favor of Lance. It’s a question of when. Lance brings so much more to the gridiron thanks to his dynamic rushing ability, but still needs to work on his accuracy, consistency from the pocket and adjusting to the pro game.
