A high school student in New Jersey who hopes to serve in the U.S. military is already working hard to help veterans. Michael Ferrara became invested in helping homeless vets after realizing that people who fought for our country were now living on the streets. “I think that’s absolutely unacceptable,” the teen says, so he decided to do something about it.
Ferrara was already training for the Marine Corps Marathon, so he dedicated his race to Houses for Warriors, a Colorado-based charity that helps get homeless and at-risk veterans off the streets. He was able to raise more than $10-thousand through donations for the marathon and with various fundraising events, he brought the total to $12-thousand. And he gave it all to Houses for Warriors.
The gift helped the organization open their first group home, which will house up to nine homeless veterans in a more long-term place than just a bed at a shelter. Ferrara says he raised money for the Colorado nonprofit as a New Jersey resident because a homeless vet is a homeless vet, regardless of where they live. “Our veterans have fought for all 50 states, not just one,” he explains. “So I feel it would be wrong of me not to raise money for homeless veterans just because they happen to live in a different state.”
