Report: Heat interested in signing Spencer Dinwiddie if they lose out on Kyle Lowry

The Miami Heat reportedly have a backup plan if they are unable to land veteran point guard Kyle Lowry in free agency.

According to Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, the Heat are keeping an eye on Spencer Dinwiddie, who declined his $12.3 million player option with the Brooklyn Nets for the 2021-22 season to become a free agent.

Lowry, who has spent the last nine seasons with the Toronto Raptors, is reportedly drawing interest from the Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans, in addition to the Heat.

Dinwiddie has not played since the third game of the regular season after partially tearing the ACL in his right knee. The 28-year-old averaged 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and three assists per game in the contests he played.

Dinwiddie had a career year during the 2019-20 campaign, averaging 20.6 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 64 games for the Nets. The California native has evolved into a good facilitator and a good scorer, two attributes Miami could use after being swept out of the 2021 NBA playoffs by the Milwaukee Bucks.

There will presumably be a competitive market for Dinwiddie. However, Miami has long been an intriguing destination for free agents. Still, that might not be enough to reel him in. According to Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Dinwiddie is keen on joining the Lakers.

The former second-round pick reportedly said that a five-year deal in the $125 million range would likely keep him in Brooklyn. If that's the case, the Lakers probably won't be able to compete for his services this summer.

In addition to Lowry and Dinwiddie, the Heat have been linked to Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram, Collin Sexton, Kevin Love and Damian Lillard.
